UltraDMA CRC Error Count attribute is very low!

That error is suposed to be indicitive of a bad cable, but can also be caused by the drive receiving poor power or a number of other things. I'd reseat the cables and if that doesnt work try another IDE cable and power connector.

    Going on a bandwidth diet

I'm not sure if you have control over this or not, but I just implemented mod_gzip compression on our internal website and it now uses roughly 1/3rd the bandwidth. With Apache you can implement this at the virtual server level or with a .htaccess file for specific directories. It took only a...

This Call May Be Recorded For Quality Assurance

It does work well, but after getting on the DNC list I started receiving more calls from charities and gov't. I assume they got our number from the DNC list. ...on the other hand, perhaps I just notice them more now.

Monday Night/Tues Morning ICQ servers truncated all passwords to 8 digits... http://forums.miranda-im.org/showthread.php?t=3346 This caused me a chunk of pain on two ICQ business accounts, so I just wanted to alert everyone. ICQ had nothing on their site about this mess and their support...

    Linux router on a floppy

Agreed, I've used Coyote with good success... but it was on a 486.... However, i've upgraded to smoothwall and probably wouldn't go back. I'm hoping that USB pen drives will be the next "floppy" firewall. (Then you'd basically have a Linksys WRT-54G with more flexibility)

    Dell PowerConnect any good?

That's what I did, dropped from the attic to the upstiars bedrooms and ran an outside run from basement to the attic. It actually goes well with 2 people and some way to communicate (FRS radio, cell phone, or cordless phones on the same line will work in a pinch) You only need some leviton...

Video editing solution? Burning to DVD?

Nothing this year, but I had good luck with a Radeon 9x00 VIVO card and some third party software from Intervideo called WinDVR. I've also used the ATi TV wonder (rebadged conexant PCI capture card which is as generic as you can get). The ATi hardware was actually very picky and the ATi...

    Dell PowerConnect any good?

I have the Netgear GS608 and noticed speeds are slightly slower using it vs a direct PC to PC connection. No hard numbers for you though. One oddity I had was using a length of CAT 6 cable caused traffic going one direction (only affected 1 direction) to go very slowly. Replacing the cable...

    DSL router problems

Since you didnt have to play w/ the router to get it working originally, I'll assume you have DHCP (automatic, no login, just plug and go) I would follow the instructions to reset the router to factory defaults using the reset button. Cats and moths or, Tannin, do I have a weird cat?

I've heard that cats can get worms from this, but our Himalayan likes to do this too. I pretty much let our cats do what they enjoy and I like to see them happy so I let them hunt the bugs (sometimes spiders) and lizards (for our puppy cat that likes to venture outside) around here.

    I'm in love

no, royalties on DVI (for the connector) make VGA connector + DAC still cheaper. Plus there's the whole thing about what people will pay for a product, so even if it is cheaper to produce (Tape vs CD, Tape vs DVD, etc) people will still be willing to pay more for the better of the two...

    Digital Camera

I haven't thoroughly read this thread, but I wanted to interject a point that was touched on above. The charger seems to make as much difference as the type of batteries you buy. A bad charger can easily overcharge or undercharge your batteries, so I can't recommend enough on getting a good...

That's good to hear. I recommended one to a friend and was about to pick up a few myself when they were on sale at microcenter the other week. But I missed out by a few days. Their features and price make them pretty attractive compared to an APC or Tripp-lite alternative.

The OPTI-UPS LS960B from newegg is cheaper than the APC, has a higher rating, and has AVR, which means it is probably a line-interactive UPS versus the standby UPS that the APC unit appears to be. Having a line interactive UPS will also protect you against power sags, not just the surges and...
