    [NEWS] - Athlon64 3400+ in stock for 440$ shipped.

The pentium4 still shows off it's optimizations in audio/video encoding and 2d/3d rendering in photoshop and 3d studio max. I wonder how my celeron's compare.

    winXP SP2 looks good

A good writeup about some of the more interesting features of XP. Despite the fact that the article is written like that of a high school student I think it covers many of the features that the general masses will be interested in. http://www.arstechnica.com/wankerdesk/04q1/sp2-beta-1.html...

The SiS has drivers that came with the motherboard. There is a DOS packet driver, lanman.dos, a win3.1 driver, netware 4, 5, and 6, win 9x/Me, and NT/2k/XP drivers. The linksys NIC comes with drivers for SCO unix, instructions for getting the freeBSD 3.3 drivers along with liux, a DOS packet...

during highschool I used to drink about 2 pots a day.. but lately it's more like once or two cups a week (just got a new coffee maker for christmas). Before that it was either nothing or maybe 1 cup from quick trip a month.

    Sudden shutdown

shutting down after only a few seconds (literally) sounds like overheating or a "fan off control". You'll want to make sure you have your CPU fan plugged into the CPU_FAN header on your motherboard and ensure the fan is spinning at atleast the minimum allowewd by your board (usually around...

hmm, I have no problems with the BIOS in the k7s8xe+. It's a little different than the BIOSes I'm used to from my former VIA/SiS boards, but it's perfectly usable and I have had no problems with it. The K7S8Xe+ has a whopping 6 USB ports on the backplate, pushing the game port to a PCI slot...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

just clocked it, the 1GB file now transfers at 8,982,020 bytes/sec. I also notice I'm not showing any errors. (before I was getting maybe 1 Tx Error per 100MB with the netgear) I think this definitely shows the performance of NICs isn't necessarily related to their cost. (The 3com NICs being...

[NEWS] - Maxtor new boosting software : Maxboost

i installed the software on my girlfriend's computer (SS51G, 512MB PC2100, 2.0GHz Celerwood w/ 80GB DM+9, 2MB cache version) She said it made it faster in photoshop (about all she does on it). More RAM would be the next upgrade (to 1GB), then a real p4 CPU when prices come down.

    Building a Storage Server Thread

wow, I decided to do my updating on the server pre core 2.... I found that transfers between the linksys NC100 and the SiS 900 NICs are absolutely fantastic.. I'm getting nearly 9MB/sec sustained traffic over the LAN. I'm sure that works out to be at least 8.5MB/sec for file transfers over SMB...

That is what I was measuring, and by my tests it doesn't make a whole hoot of a difference. Certainly not worth paying 4 times as much (assume cost of a $50 pII/III system vs a faster athlon system) for a <10% performance increase for most home users.

Why does this eat my processor?

That site will not load without flash... i dont know if you could call it a website... it is more of a "flash site".
  13. blakerwry

Why does this eat my processor?

the flash uses up 100% of my CPU (or very close) on a 2GHz athlonXP w 512MB PC2700. I have a feeling it would do this not matter how fast a CPU you had. Even though the CPU usage is very high, the videos play fine for me. Minimizing the flash made some of the videos start faster or play a...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

I should have mentioned, I also used a promise Ultra controller (the drive runs in UDMA mode2), win2k and a 50 foot length of cat5e. It would be interesting to set my bus speed to 66MHz (433MHz CPU speed) to more closely simulate an older/slower pentium II. Maybe I'll mess with that tomorrow.

ECS K7S5A Pro uses double-sided tape on NB heatsink

I've seen 486 processors that used a sort of double sided tape.. more like an adheasive pad. There's nothing wrong with tape if it does the job. It's probably cheaper, easier to work with, and more forgiving than epoxy, glue, or grease.

    [NEWS] - Farewell Win98

I run win98(se) on my laptop. win2k is slow and sucks the battery life even worse than win98. I'm sure DOS would be great.... That reminds me... since winME came with a new version of DOS, is DOS still supported?

    Building a Storage Server Thread

I could always take my CPU and clock it at 100MHz, 133MHz, and 166MHz bus speeds. That would show a clear comparison between CPU/RAM speed and the effect on transfers. Infact. For the test I put my CPU back at 133MHz bus, but I also tested at a 160MHz bus (my standard). There was no difference...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

if you want, i can setup a PII/III system based on a 440BX and do my own test using a 3com 905 or other NIC. It's an easy way to prove my beliefs right or wrong. I think the only available HDD I have right now are 5400rpm or slower <10 giggers (miles away from a 75gxp), but I might still be...

it's just a different registry entry.. My main problem was that auto insert notification caused a 1-2 second pause when inserting a CD. I thought the problemw as auto play, but it was infact the auto insert notification. Here's 2 differet ways that I found easily via google.

when copying a large file like that you have to consider the hard drive. Is it running in DMA?, is it defragmented?, is it doing something else simultaneously?. What you're testing is not the network, you are testing the system as a whole. One weak link and you're not going to get the...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

sorry if I'm being an ass. I've been up too long. I agree that a good NIC makes a difference. I've noticed that cheap NICs can get as little as 4-5MB/sec transfer rate while the better ones can get nearly 8. Having a good switch will help as well.

    Building a Storage Server Thread

Bozo, dont let your name give away too much. I know what DMA is and what it does. When transfering information to/from any device that uses DMA to main system memory it reduces the need of the CPU to be involved. NIC offloading is less important... and infact may not even be desirable on a...

yup, win2k server w/ 5-10 CAL's going for about $100-$200 on ebay. Advanced server maybe $50-100 more. *nix is free and you can pretty easily setup software RAID 5 during the installation on any major distribution last time I checked (red hat 6/7 or mandrake 7/8). since most linux...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

And their is the magic of DMA and CPU offloading for the NIC. Bottom line, no. It really doesn't take alot of processing power for a 100MBit setup. For a Gig-e setup with jumbo frames I would stick with a PIII or higher though. It would be nice to go with something that had the NIC on PCI and...

yup, caompare the blue caps with the smaller green one and it's plainly obvious that they're bulging as well as leaking. Echoing what others have said previously, from my experience you'll get instability and eventually failure to boot. It's an easily repairable problem if you have the caps...
