''State Of The Art'' CPU Cooling (Circa Dec 2003)

never heard it referred to as a trimmer before... also, why did you need a regulator? I've taken a circuits class, but have a pretty basic understanding of electronics components... A trimmer is the same as a potentiometer or a variable resistor/rheostat, is it not? given the DC current of...

US government agency takes on Pop-up software

I agree, XP home is a pain in the butt and, in my experience, is simply flakey for things that have worked fine since winNT 4.0. (like simple file sharing and file sharing in general) To be honest, I'm surprised I havent had a problem sharing a printer connected to an XP home machine.

lol, two fanmates ins series??? hahaha.... I think at that point I would just solder a fixed resistor on there and use a single fanmate. $0.10 + $5.00 instead of $5.00 x 2.

US government agency takes on Pop-up software

agreed. This is a program that ahs been running on NT computers for atleast 8 years now for good reason. It has only recently been a pain because of the major switch from 9x to NT based OS on the desktop. 9x can recieve these messages just the same as NT can if the winpopup service is running...

[news] Student finds largest known prime number

unfortunately I dont have a c++ compiler on my system to run this program... and you're right, I dont have big enough variables... I wouldn't even know where to start to get variables as big as those used by the program featured in the news article... I know java has a big integer class, but I...

My pc keeps loosing data. Help!

I usually use a program called memtest86 to test my RAM. If the RAM has major problems (ie: windows wont install) then you'll usually see an error pretty quickly. But I like to run it overnight to see if there are any possible problems with the RAM. If you have 2 or more sticks I would try 1...

[news] Student finds largest known prime number

yeah, I realize that. That's what you get when you write a program in 2 minutes and you dont want to have to error check it for every possible value. I imagine that you could try to devide the possible prime number by (2^a)-1 where the value of a is decreased everytime. It would be...

    Winamp 5 released.

im not happy with any audio player.... I searched the whole of sourceforge and found nothing but a few linux apps that looked like they may or may not be worth the time to isntall... I searched shareware galleries abound.. even fruitless googlesearches... most players are just winamp clones...

[news] Student finds largest known prime number

man, that's an interesting data class they used... the ability to hold numbers that large... I wonder if they used a string and converted it to a number or if they used a data type that is natively a number... By my dumb math, the minimum size of this data type would have to be atleast...

    Intereting read

i would assume the FAT/MFT keep track of where files are located... The data area on a HDD may as well all be written to, when a file is deleted the data remains written to disk, just the initial link to the file in the FAT is probably removed.

    Intereting read

yeah, that's the logic he used... seeking would be faster because it's more likely you'll have an empty block to write to close by than the block you'll want to read from. I think random writes are about equal or possibly faster than random reads.. But sequential writes always seem to be...

    Intereting read

I was always tought that writes were slower than reads. And my own experience confirms this. The writer of the review (2nd link) says that this, infact, is quite the opposite and that reads should be slower than writes....or possibly about equal. I think he's wrong, what do you guys think?

lol, how'd I get thrown into this? Although that reminds me of my friends 1Kilo-Amp Memphis audio sub amp with 3 1000 watt 12" subs in a ford escort zx2... along with a 4 channel memphis audio amp for the front and rear speakers. The magnets on those subs were huge.

New to me : Omega drivers for various graphic cards.
