Congratulations Mercutio. And it's really very good you got a job near your house. Believe me: living the traffic of Rome every day... <sigh>... I know what means to have your work near...

    CDRW questions

Definitely it's not the RICOH. It's the whole CD-RW burning that's sometimes (not always!) unreliable... I use a Plextor 16x10x40x, one of the best in its class, and sometimes InCD (and Windows) don't recognize my archive CD-RWs. For no apparent reason. Well, I eject the CD and place it again...

    World Trade Center photos

I understand you... photos can't include peripheral imaging beyond the visual tunnel, neither smells, nore feelings that arise by the "disaster aura"... I felt strange seeing these photos myself, even as a foreigner. I was in these two towers both day and night, passing throught that bridge...

WD drive with 8MB cache - is the hype justified?

I don't think anyone said that. (And if he did, he was wrong!) It can compete with 7200 or 10000 RPM SCSI drives, but not with 15000 for sure... Oh, and the hype is true. The drive rocks and I still can't understand why other companies haven't announced models bearing an increased cache.

Installed Windows .NET enterprise server tonight...

Yeah but still... 1GB for 4 previous-generation Pentium 2 processors is more than enough, even for server enviroments... OK OK, that depends... but 170MB is far less the 1024 available...

That explains all. Unfortunately, Mercutio, with current generation hardware and the latest game titles the situation is very different. Well, if you happen to get an issue of Scientific American of February 2002, turn to page 18. Linux and Gaming

You're probably talking about the TransGaming Project. It is mainly tested on Mandrake distros (that's why I ordered 8.1 back in 2001  ), but beware: it's a subscription service and if your game is voted by many other subscribers (they have a rank) will be ported to Linux... <sigh>...

You have just spoked into the core of the problem... :) This is the greatest issue... If I were back home in Greece (I sport 3 PCs there!) I would have installed the darn OS right away... but having to dual-boot my current PC is a more risky approach. You can't have real-time answers otherwise...

  44. P

    Giving Linux a 2nd chance

I know I'm playing with fire here... but I want to try my luck again with Linux. This time doing things right and buying SuSE, not Mandrake... not yet of course... when the new version (7.4 or 8.0) arrives and if my Audigy and the rest of my hardware is already supported by the latest kernel...

I was wondering if the decadence of the SR forums is due a to signal-to-noise ratio decrease (due to the absence of old-time Fixtures) or due to real problems after the "tragic events of 12/29"... :-? Time will tell... However, it has been a pleasant surprise to see Eugene back again active...
