Fast CPU for video transcoding? Xeon?

x265 is still pretty new relatively speaking, so it should get better with more tuning and tweaking. But people who are using it instead of x264 for high quality Blu-ray rips are likely doing themselves a disservice.

Fast CPU for video transcoding? Xeon?

Is Handbrake using x265 as its HEVC encoder? Most of the folks on the doom9 forum are unhappy with x265 if they're after a high quality transparent encode. They say x264 has better image quality that x265 can't match no matter the bitrate or settings you use. However, if you want something...

    Windows 8.1

Glad you figured it out. Is there some tool I can run on a Windows XP system that will tell me if it checks all the right boxes for supporting Windows 8.1? Or do I need to use something like CPU-Z and make sure the CPU checks the right boxes?

So I did get a reply from MassDrop. Apparently AKG is repairing / replacing all the defective headphones and covering shipping both ways, so I just need to contact them and get the process started.

That has to be painful. I guess that's why no one uses it. ;) WinXP on an Atom was bad enough.

    TVs and things

Maybe. The problem with the 2014 models was that there weren't chips available with both HDCP 2.2 and 18gbps HDMI 2.0. Those chips became available from Silicon Image last fall. It seems strange they haven't found their way into the 2015 TV models. However, I was under the impression that a...

    Beverages

Most beer isn't very good to start with IMHO. However, I'd expect non-alcoholic beer is likely worse. Of mainstream beer I do like Corona with a lime. There are some rather tasty alcoholic beverages out there though.

I expect the domestic violence crowd isn't buying >$50 bottles of Scotch to get blitzed and then beat their significant other. Probably something more like Rich & Rare.

I'm sure there are plenty of Muslims and Mormons who can best your "achievement". ;) I'm not a big drinker, but I do like a top shelf margarita with Cointreau and Grand Marnier. I also like some of the hard ciders (Strongbow, Crispin Pear, Magners).

    TVs and things

An 18gbps port has to allow 4:4:4 at 60Hz. The Vizio and most other TVs don't have one. They only have a 10.2gbps HDMI 2.0 port. The other option is a TV with DisplayPort. I think only Panasonic has DP.
  16. S

    TVs and things

Make sure whatever UHD TV you buy has at least one full 18gbps HDMI 2.0 port. Otherwise you will find it doesn't work too well as a monitor from a PC because you will be limited to 4:2:0 chroma when you try to drive it 3840x2160 @ 60Hz from a PC.

    Beverages

You got me. Each state has all sorts of silly rules about the sale of alcohol. They probably didn't sell enough of it, so when their license / authorization to sell in Michigan lapsed they didn't renew it and it became illegal to distribute.

    Beverages

Several of my coworkers are all about Balblair. Unfortunately it's not legal to sell in Michigan any more so they've taken to buying it online. Courtesy of them I've gotten to sample all sorts of Whiskey, Scotch, Bourbon, & Cognac. A few weeks ago we went to this activity. I still prefer my...

    Windows 8.1

So Windows 8.1 isn't really impressing me with its durability. I've got it on my two Zotac BI320 systems. The newer of which I'm trying to set up as a new PC for my parents. I put in 8gB of RAM, a larger / faster SSD, and a 1TB spinning drive. On that one Windows 8.1 already crapped the bed...

question RDP patch broken in Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 by Windows Update?

I am extremely skeptical after skimming their benchmark report. Per that it's the highest FPS, lowest latency, and least BW solution. What compression wizardry are they using to achieve that?

question RDP patch broken in Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 by Windows Update?

So I finally got around to fixing my RDP problem. I used RDPwrap. It worked on all three of my Windows 7 Home Premium systems. I'm also thinking to give AnyDesk a try. They make really big claims about its performance which seem hard to believe.

I'm a bit jaded after my AKG K7XX experience. The headphones buzz in left channel when low frequencies test tones are played at any audible volume. The right channel is fine. Other headphones I have don't have this problem. So far neither MassDrop or AKG have stepped up to rectify the...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Oh. Are the keys in the BIOS device specific (like each PC has it's own unique key) or is it like Windows 7 where each OEM had a unique key? FWIW, these Zotac boxes came with some sort of Windows 8.1 DVD. I haven't put it in a drive to see exactly what it is.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I decided to go with the 250gB MX200. I received it today and will get it installed when I get home. I just need to restore the Windows 8.1 install from the backup image I made of the existing SSD. The existing SSD has 3 partitions and one of them is a ~6gB recovery partition that is about...

I'm pretty sure the idea was to the benchmark the controller's and interface's capabilities which required removing the drives as a potential bottleneck. Hence the use of SSDs.

I'm not sure I agree. I would expect the pace of advancement to accelerate not slow. How else are you going to get people to upgrade? Rationing a few more MP and slightly better low light performance every refresh isn't working anymore.

Mixing different drives is bound to have some impact. It may not be noticeable though. A newer drive is also likely to be faster, so it's probably not going to slow down the NAS.
