    dSLR thread

I very rarely use my DSLRs anymore. I have mostly been using my Powershot S90 and more recently the refurb S100 I picked up. The pocketable form factor is much more convenient when traveling/sight seeing. That's the big reason why I bought the refurb Sony RX100 MkII. Even better image...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I think you would notice the performance increase of a top tier SSD like a Samsung 850 Pro or Sandisk Extreme Pro vs. your Intel.

    8TB and no helium

I've had good luck with Samsung and Hitachi. Seagate hasn't fared quite as well. I haven't had a WD since the IDE days (mostly because I'm using drives in RAID and the WDs didn't play nice).

    Slow site performance?

FWIW, I was getting 500 internal server errors this morning just after 7am eastern time. Refreshing generally worked, but it was still quite slow. All seems fine now.

It's hard to say how they would compare. I haven't heard either. Everyone has different tastes. I'm in on the campaign myself. Mostly based on the feedback of the custom version of the Supra, the EP-2. link. He's supposed to have a review of the Supra up in a few days.

    dSLR thread

So I bought a few SD cards during the various Black Friday deals. I got 32gB and 64gB Sandisk Extreme Plus and 32gB and 64gB Samsung Pro cards. I ran CrystalDiskMark benchmarks on the cards in a PCIe and a USB3 reader. Using the internal PCIe reader in my HP Elitebook: 32gB Samsung Pro...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

I don't know how that can possibly dissipate 100W of heat.

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

How many watts are you going to running down the cable? Unless it's hundreds of watts (nearer the 1kW range) 12ga wire is fine. On the volume control I'm not sure. You're probably better off finding a way to remotely control the volume of the amp with IR extenders or similar rather than...

    question Replacement Thinkpad battery

I ended up ordering a new Lenovo 6-cell battery on eBay for $40 shipped. The backstory on the batteries seems believable. The seller says they're from July 2014, but the date code in the picture is the end of 2013. I can't quite tell if it's 10, 11, or 12. It will be interesting to see what...

A SSD may benefit him more than 8GB of RAM. I can't be completely sure though. I still use several computers that only have 4gB of RAM regularly and they're not really any slower than the ones with 16gB for any normal use.

SSDs - State of the Product?

If you want some lulz, you could send them an invoice and see if they pay it. If that fails sick a collections agency on them. You won't get much of the money, but it could be good for some laughs. Or, as loath as I am to suggest it, you could take to social media in an attempt to embarrass...

SSDs - State of the Product?

They still only rated it for 150TB regardless of drive size. How does a 1TB model have the same endurance as a 128gB model? Are they putting better chips in the 128gB allowing it to handle more P/E cycles? Granted, 150TB is more than any other consumer grade drive that I'm aware of...

    Best movie you've seen

So I watched the Lego movie last night. I was really into Lego when I was young. Having said that, I didn't find the movie to be very good. Yes, some parts of it were clever, but it was nothing like the well done Pixar movies. Maybe I had heard too much hype about it before seeing it which...

    question Replacement Thinkpad battery

What's your take on the people selling new Lenovo batteries on ebay? They're between $40 and $45. They say they're Genuine, but they all use the same picture with a date code from 3 years ago. If they send a knock off that should be a quick ebay/paypal claim. I was thinking to ask a few of...

What have you guy done about replacement batteries for laptops? Specifically for a Thinkpad. The system in question is a T410. It's complaining about the battery and the life is only about half of what it used to be. I plan to go with a 6 cell battery. Obviously I want a new battery. Are...

problem The display of a 6 year old Compaq laptop remains black upon start or restart

What happens if you plug an external monitor into it? The display itself could have failed, the backlight for the display could be dead, or there could be some software setting that causes it to simply not to output and image to the screen. You should still see the BIOS screen in the latter...
