SSDs - State of the Product?

For those worried about the write endurance of their SSDs, this might be enlightening. Sounds like for most people it is unwarranted. I do like data from larger sample sizes, it is still a rare thing.

Reviews for the 9700X and 9600X are out. Seems that for games the last gen "X3D" chips are still winners both in terms of performance and power consumption. Looking forward to the 9950X3D when that comes out. Also seems there is quite a bit of room in these chips for overclocking and playing...

Honestly at least some of that pricing difference could be a change in response to Intel screwing up so badly. There is less competition than anticipated even 6 weeks ago.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm hoping some competition will bring the prices down more quickly. I'd be happy with 80% of the performance for half the price.

Intel 13900k and 14900k chip failures

Boeing changed leadership (and ethics) a while ago, and can't seem to get out of their own way since. A very insightful look into the situation:

I'm getting Boeing vibes from the current Intel situation, so I'll be steering clear for the next few years I think. And selling off my shares in the company over the next bit.

I didn't run performance benchmarks, but I did the BIOS update this morning and the FPS in my games is unchanged. Not saying that there isn't a performance loss, or that it couldn't be measured, but at least it isn't crippling the system.

    Longest?

I used to have a bunch of servers running like that. They seemed to fail most during a restart or backup routine. Eventually migrated them all to VMs. If they were the only server I migrated them to a VM on one of the desktops. Much easier to backup a VM than bare metal.

I think the oldest piece of gear that I have running here is from the launch of the 2080, so 5 years ago. Older stuff is still running elsewhere, but was gifted and no longer monitored or managed by me.

Intel 13900k and 14900k chip failures

That changes over time. My first couple computers were built from parts scavenged from the dumpster behind CompUSA. Same with my whole first lab where I learned all the things that got me work. It wasn't until years and several job changes later that I could get a good computer (at the time good...

In my last build I had to buy everything, as I came to DK with a suitcase. The build was just a bit under $10k. I did order a bulk pack of Noctuas since I was building 3 PCs, but they were still more than in the US thanks to VAT.

Intel 13900k and 14900k chip failures

There have been loads of fan reviews and comparisons over the years, most say that the Noctua performs 0-15% better while being 10-20% quieter for double the money. If you're price sensitive this is a bad deal, but if your rig cost >$2k it makes sense to not screw around with cooling.

The overvoltage can be fixed with microcode, but they've really been trying to undersell the part they can't fix. Oxidation inside the vias of the chips. This can cause premature chip death to some percentage of the chips, and explains why Intel has been readily replacing chips with their large...

I'd hold off just a bit, it seems Noctua missed a potential rattle in the G2. Currently offering full refunds. They are handling the situation in the best way possible, and are still the go-to in my opinion, but I'd just wait until they are shipping units where this issue is resolved...

I also think DP and HDMI will both be around in a few years. I'm running Win11, so my screenshots won't help you. Right-click on the network icon in the taskbar (down near the clock) and choose "properties" or something similar to that. There should be something called "link speed" or similar.

    Network the NAS

In Windows you should be able to see what speed the network connection has negotiated. Just make sure it hasn't settled on 1Gb. If it has, I'd start by swapping out the cable (just cause it is easy), then mess with drivers.
