This is the thread for the discussion of interesting apps.

Running GPS on a phone significantly increases the power consumption of the device. You might need one of these external batteries to get through a day (assuming you can recharge everything at night). I haven't done GPS tagging, so just to confirm your requirements, you need the phone to use...

The pros don't do this kind of thing, as there is no practical or commercial application. There are very few more powerful LEDs, you are quickly approaching scanning laser levels of power. The current most powerful light is the one on top of the Luxor in Vegas, and they use 39x 7kW Xenon bulbs...

    UPS for server room

This is what I'm looking at for my new system, only skipping the inverter step if possible for efficiency reasons. We have access to lots of cheap porta-potties mounted to pallet skids. I'll probably gut one, install some shelves, stick the batteries on the shelves, and bolt the charge...

    UPS for server room

I can pump 48v into this and power PoE devices. This switch runs off PoE. This should let me pull 48v out of the PoE to power non-PoE devices that can take 48v (like IR illuminators)

    UPS for server room

One of my upcoming designs is built around everything on the system being 48v PoE and being driven directly by a 48v battery bank that is charged directly by a 48v solar charge controller fed by panels. This should eliminate most of the efficiency losses and allow the system to scale much more...

CamScanner is great. I already use it for some other work-related tasks. As strange as it may seem one of the appeals is to use a different program so the images are automatically stored in their own location.

    UPS for server room

I was performing some tests on a very high capacity UPS for low loads (couple hundred watts) over a long period of time. Specifically an APC SMX2200RMLV2U with 5x APC SMX48RMBP2U battery pack additions. The power consumption of the unit itself (control circuitry, fan, etc) was much higher than...

I feel more comfortable hard-mounting hardcases to the sides of heatsinks. I'll probably use brackets of some kind. When it is on a vehicle or other machine I can draw power from them. When it is handheld I'll need another power source. I'd be running at least 4-6 of them, possibly more...

Microsoft Moving to Per-Core Licencing for Server 2016

This. One of our software vendors was facing a huge backlash for using Oracle, and has eaten high costs converting their product back to MSSQL. For reference, I can buy the entire MSSQL package and the backup program for the cost of one year's maintenance for the Oracle install that does the...

    Headphones

In pursuit of more low end in headphone use, I'm looking at the HE400i (possibly 560?). I have no experience with planar magnetic units, and understand that I'll also need an amp to power them? Pretty sure I'd benefit from closed-back units as well.

    question Truecrypt

I'm still suggesting TrueCrypt to clients. Interesting security step one of them added was to hard mount the UPS so that the tower would have to lose power when stolen. Theoretically they could hang out in the office, but the alarm and guard would discourage that.

Microsoft Moving to Per-Core Licencing for Server 2016

Oracle did it a long time ago. I'm sure MSSQL will be doing the same if they haven't already. As your product gets more capable (and therefore used in larger systems), you need a way to price descriminate and extract more from those customers who are getting more from your product. With modern...

    4k TVs and Monitors

I'm marking some of that up to early adopter stuff...that was pretty early in the whole 4k thing. I'd rather it be made by Dell, HP, Samsung, ASUS, or just about anyone else and would happily pay a premium. But I don't see them in that space.
