    dSLR thread

I don't have a degree, but science in general (physics in particular) are a fairly deep hobby. It certainly helps. I'd love to be part of a club, but don't have enough time to make any kind of commitment.

I want to buy a new car

There are very few places without empty roads, you just happen to live in one of them. There are countless options around here if you want to explore the limits a bit. Plus a world-class racetrack if you want to go really nuts.

I also use Google Authenticator for some stuff, but a physical key to unlock the smartphone seems like a great idea to me. Another thing I just found out about is Intel True Key. Looks interesting.

    8k TVs and Monitors

I thought the same thing. Or a wall of 55" 1080P Televisions. If you go larger 4k and do the math just right, you could get a smooth radius of curved TVs across the front of the room. That would look incrediballs.

My new smartphone (LG G4) doesn't have a fingerprint reader on it (sad). If it did I wouldn't bother, but now you have me thinking it would be a nice thing to have. I'll have to look into whether the YubiKey Neo will allow me to unlock my phone and activate Lastpass via NFC. That could be really...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

I think it is all relative to what the author of the pages you are viewing had in mind. The BBS days had all kinds of optimizations for low-bandwith connections, but I remember being on 28.8 long after 56k was a regular thing and suffering for it. Then when I had dual ISDN when everyone else was...

Google is the gold-standard of search engines, Yahoo has been deteriorating lately and might be as bad as Bing at this point. Even worse is that they don't seem to have the bandwidth/computing power to serve all the searches coming in since they bribed the Firefox devs to move everyone to Yahoo...

Eventually you won't have the time to change. Eventually you'll have brand-new computer hardware still sitting in boxes after weeks just because you haven't had time to get to it.

Test drove one in 2011 when I got my car. I don't fit in the hardtop (I'm 6'3") and I consider a car without a solid roof incomplete. I'll have to try the new one, but considering it is smaller and lighter I don't have many hopes.

Yup. No problem at all. And if you find yourself running more devices that can use PoE (cameras, APs, etc), you can get a switch that includes providing PoE power and simplify your wiring further.

    IPv6

The responses to that post make the same statements I'm about to. The default assumption in an IPv4 Firewall/NAT setup is to deny all incoming traffic. This is the assumption because with NAT enabled you would have to specify to which NATed computer the traffic would go to. Similarly, giving...

    IPv6

I don't know enough to speak intelligently about it yet, but I really like NAT and non-routable IP addresses. This is the simplest thing a firewall can do, and I'm not looking forward to being without it.

    Reasons to Root your phone?

The argument against waiting is that the manufacturer tends to block the exploits used to root in future updates. An update that came out about 6 months after my S5 shipped prevented any of the existing root methods from working.

    Reasons to Root your phone?

Yeah, I was aware of that, and it is mildly unsatisfactory. For me it isn't as big a concern as I typically kill phones before others, so they will have a need longer than I do. Shame we can't run phones like computers (stock Android download, install drivers and utilities, have a functional phone).
  42. ddrueding

    Reasons to Root your phone?

Yeah, I hope to not be worrying about that much. Even the S4 was a PITA; no heat-gun necessary, but a full tear-down and the touchscreen rarely worked after. Blah. I've downloaded the files for a G4 root. Do you mean that the process is a pain, or that the result is unsatisfactory?

    Laptop whines on battery power

Whine is typically from a coil rather than a cap. Does the quality of the whine vary with power draw? How about with charge level (voltage)? The good news is that if you can find the offending coil (if that is what it is), you can fix it with hot glue. My theory would be that the ferrite rod in...

I'm not worried about it, I was just expecting a $15k server to perform better relative to an older gaming GPU. The last time I did something like this I was getting huge bonuses for completing units early.
