    Cold

The only places I've been where my affluent American self would have expected hot water and it wasn't there was Asia. Nepal, India, Thailand, Burma, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines, etc. Even the cheap places in the UK (even Scotland!) had warm water at the bathroom and kitchen sink. Mostly...

    4k TVs and Monitors

Not ordered yet, I was going to give it the weekend for someone here to provide a reason not to ;). 24" simply isn't enough for 4K unless you are doing some crazy level of scaling.

The cat is included in the downpipe, which is why it costs $800 and the entire TBE is only $1300.

    Problem with RAID disk

I run a lot of Synology units, but I don't know the first thing about Linux file system tools. When the drive fails I just replace it and let the system re-replicate to the new drive. You were running in RAID1, yes?

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Awesome. And leave it sitting on the floor? Or put a bottom on that part of the cabinet as well?

After some back-and-forth with their head tech, it turns out that their current exhaust does not work with AWD cars. They are working on one, but don't have it out yet. They do have a 3" downpipe available (same as the Golf R). Previous order cancelled. New order: 3" Downpipe Carbino Intake...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Gotcha. Well, the location is certainly fixed. With that in mind, I'm not sure what would be done with even a store-bought unit to "fit" that location.

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

At the moment I was planning on the former, but eventually will want something bigger, and was considering the latter.

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

How about the space for the Sub? I've allocated a cube 24" wide, 24" deep, and nearly 30" high with almost the entire front open (covered in speaker fabric). At the moment I only have the entry-level Polk sub (PSW10) to toss in there. Should I worry about reinforcing the sides? Sealing it...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Good to know. While I could have replicated the shape, not having to makes it way less awkward. Shape really doesn't matter? Even funny angles and stuff? I've read speaker design summaries talking about 45-degree this and that...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

It is floor to ceiling and 2' deep but only 17' long (room is 33' long). I could easily reproduce the shape and volume of a standard wall cavity if that is what the speaker has been optimized for.

That actually is the eventual plan, already done in the master bedroom. Next up is the living room.
  18. ddrueding

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Polk looks tempting. If I am building them into the cabinet instead of a wall cavity, what can I optimize? Rigidity of the enclosure? Cavity volume/shape? Front ports?
  19. ddrueding

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Nice audio. The room is not a HT, just a living room with many sub-optimal features. These speakers would probably spend more time playing background music to someone 20' away off-axis who doesn't care than playing movies, but I want the ability to be there. $3k would be the top-end of what I...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Yeah, I won't be able to do that. Filling the area around the speakers behind the screen with absorptive sound treatment is totally possible, but the rest is shelving and cabinetry.

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

So choosing a kit of speakers/electronics that are already known to work well and then building it in wouldn't be that hard? I'm thinking back to your earlier comments about putting speakers in small cubbies having a negative effect, would it be more beneficial to have the speaker enclosure...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Since I'm having all this cabinet work done anyway, should I consider building the speakers into the space? I'm currently using SolidWorks to design the woodwork, and the guy I'm working with has the woodworking skills to fabricate whatever. I know enclosure design is a bit of an art, but it...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

The price I saw (after posting) was $38k/pair. I think I'll be looking elsewhere. I'm so in love with the sound from the A8X at work I might just get a pair of those and an A77X for the front. But I'm sure there are better deals at that quality level if I can lean on the amp in the Denon...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

I'm really leaning towards the acoustically transparent screen and putting the speakers behind it. This cabinet needs to exist for many other reasons (hide the rack, store many larger items that currently don't have homes, house the bar, etc) and with the cabinet in place there is really nowhere...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Thanks for that. If I'm getting another screen, I'm tempted to get a retractable and use the space behind the screen to hold other stuff as well as the speakers. The smallest retractable Seymour sells is the 085 (97.5" diagonal) that looks like it would be about $2k...probably not happening.

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

I like this idea a lot. The screen is only about 87" wide, is that enough to get decent stereo separation? Who's screen material should I be looking at?

They don't. Let's say we scratch the Adams for now....how about the size? Are there plenty of good options that would fit in openings 10"x24" (landscape for center, portrait for L/R)? The listening space isn't that large; the couch is 6-8 feet from the speakers and the back wall is only 12 feet...

Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

Now that the kid is starting to walk, it is time to lock up the server rack. Doing this right is complex; the plan is to build the rack into cabinetry that will cover 20' of wall and include the projector screen and front three speakers. I'm not ready to purchase the speakers yet, and haven't...

Perfectly respectable. This is of course going to be an issue. At only 5500m (18,000ft), the volume of the lifting gas needs to be double what it is at sea level. Seconded. Their cost is probably pennies as the goods (particularly gift certificates) was donated. Even the vendors are happy with the arrangement; they get a deduction of the full amount while likely 50% of the certificates will go unused and another 30%+ will generate additional revenue. If...
