Sorry for the derailment, but I don't think there is a significantly better CPU for you in the foreseeable future. A mainboard might be necessary to get you more RAM and SATA3. It might also give you better OC'ing capabilities (along with a monster cooler).

    New Computer

This is something I can attest to. Two of my first roommates went this route; finding old hardware on eBay and spending months building up and tearing down configurations. Within a year they passed many of the CCxx certification exams and went directly to $80k+/yr. They are now easily double...

Making significant progress on generating point clouds. The automatic alignment is good and the manual assisted alignment is awesome. At the moment I'm running into a few issues: 1. My "Home1" machine becomes laggy @ 50,000,000 vertices, and near unresponsive at 75 million. It seems this...

My suspicion is that tablets are putting computers back to where they were in the 50s/60s. In the hands of professionals to do the real work, while tablets are simply the modern day newspaper. AFAIK, no one has developed an app for a tablet on a tablet. Or designed the circuit board for one. No...

    Hypothetical New PC

Merc is typically the man for the super-cheap solid builds, and I suspect he will still steer you towards an i3. I'd probably look for a hybrid drive over an SSD if there was budget for it.

IMO, the trick to staying relevant is to maintain a combination of people/interaction/interpersonal/communication skills (so they can't outsource you) and technology skills (so you are the one programing the computer to do someone else's job, not the one who's job just got programmed into a...

15%? Most of that from clockspeed. I'd get something like a Corsair H100i and see if you can get more speed from your existing hardware. Maybe combine it with a SATA3 controller and some faster drives.

I was talking to a coworker about this. It seems some employees consider themselves responsible for performing a task, while others consider themselves responsible for providing a solution. The former is not worth having as an employee, IMHO.

64GB of RAM is the top end of "normal". Normal motherboards can take it, and DIMMs are easily available in densities to make it happen. And the first time I had proper money to blow on such things is about 4 years ahead of you, so you still may have some time to go. Before then it was...

    I'm retiring

That is awesome. Granted I'm some way from it, but I'd like to think of retirement as when I can turn down any work at any time for any reason. I can't see myself not working or pursuing income of some kind, but being able to say "nah" if the project doesn't sound fun would be awesome.

    New Computer

I think your best move is going for more clock speed. Just upping the cooler and doubling the RAM is probably the most effective performance boost for the photo processing workflow. I'm shocked at how often a single thread is the bottleneck; you need each core to be as fast as possible.

Start here for the CPUs. I have a 990X and was able to get it to 4.6GHz stable on air. There is a slightly better IPC on this architecture depending on application, IIRC. Doubling the RAM might help, changing the board to have the faster SATA might help. Coug will need to chip in on what is...

What were you worst computer related mistakes made?

...and an oldie but goodie. Back in the day my dad bought a mobo/CPU upgrade for the home computer. 386/33. The cool part was that the motherboard supported both 386 and 486 CPUs, so we could upgrade the CPU some day when the price came down. The downside was that, when putting a 386 CPU in one...

What were you worst computer related mistakes made?

The one that had the largest consequence and was totally my fault was accidentally shutting down a server I was remotely managing. I was in San Francisco, it was in Austin. LED flashlights

I was talking about the C-9000. While I don't doubt that it has more capabilities than other chargers, I don't believe the difference is worth the extra effort most of the time. I do still have the C-9000, but the charger I throw Eneloops into 2-3 times a day is a BC-700. So much easier. I...

problem Desktop pc freezes after I put it to Sleep a 2nd time

It doesn't solve your problem, but I'll second this. While I agree that it likely have some negative effect on the hardware that would be impossible to quantify, my gut instinct is that it is very small. My machines turn off the display and that is it. If I had a drive that wasn't an SSD I'd...

They are, but that is an additional level of knowledge that most users don't have. I've set up many Firefox installs with a few extensions that I thought they'd like (AdBlock, YouTube Downloader, etc). The user has no idea what extensions are.

The big issue I've run into so far is that this method does not work well on small items or reflective items (the Kinect projects an IR grid and uses that data to collect a depth map). Anyone have one yet? I've ordered a Kinect that I plan to use with one of the many software packages out there.
