    Random Hard Drive Shutdowns

It probably runs off the 5v line - there are less heat losses involved in regulating 5v down to the 1.6 or so that the Tualatin chip requires, but they may have used 12v for whatever reason - check the traces on the Powerleap adaptor to see which rail it uses - it might even use both so might...

    Random Hard Drive Shutdowns

I have been getting the same problem for the past 6 months with my WD800JB with the only difference that it happens once every couple of weeks, and that it just goes clunk without freezing the system (though it is the boot drive). As I have no critical data on it and can afford to rebuild the...

My new CPU is here tommorow, XP2400 thoroughbred, to replace my old 1800 palomino I've had for close on 2 years now. Should give a nice boost, I would have gone with something better like a barton but my memory is 2100 and cannot afford to replace it right now (the CPU was actually free for...

I'm starting to think this is kinda ridiculous.

Heh.... who cares about the fins when the whole fan is in the wrong direction :) It should ideally be at the edge of the card, blowing across the heatsink and towards the PCI slot openings in the case, but not feasible since the heatpipe takes up that side.

I'm starting to think this is kinda ridiculous.

I don't see anything wrong with that except the price. Either you have those silly small heatsinks and tiny, whiney fans that last 6 months and drive you mad, or you have a quality, near silent (20dB) solution that offers excellent cooling and hardly any noise. I've been selling these for...

    Dell 1800FP TFT - thoughts?

I solved the problem. Guess what? I had the analog cable connected to the monitor and hanging there when I was using the digital connection. Seems you have to fully remove the cable from the monitor before it will switch to DVI mode :) Thanks all.

    Dell 1800FP TFT - thoughts?

I'm using a 60Hz refresh, yes. I've tried rebooting, and powering down before switching the monitor but it doesn't want to work. Connecting a DVI to DB15 adaptor I cant get an analog signal out of the DVI connector either. :-? Manuals mention almost nothing, and I don't really want to install...

    Dell 1800FP TFT - thoughts?

Arrived today, its great, contrast and colours much better than the silly Hansol. Not to mention the extra inch ;) However... it will work fine off the analog port, but no signal appears to be output on the PC's DVI port. I can't seem to find a relevant option in the card's settings menu...

    Dell 1800FP TFT - thoughts?

I can return it within 7 days, but as I will be ordering from this online shop, I'd have to pay return postage which will be nasty :( If it dissapoints, I'll return it but I'd be surprised if it wasn't better than my current Hansol which I am satisfied with. Thanks, they are always made by a...

    Dell 1800FP TFT - thoughts?

I currently have a Hanson H750 17" TFT. Its a cheap thing, does its job and I'm reasonably pleased with it, considering the price I paid 6 months ago (£300). Browsing the pages of www.novatec.co.uk I found the Dell 1800FP, a black 18" TFT with 3 years warranty and DVI-in for £315 which is a...

    Review of new Toyota Prius

Perhaps where you live, round here I would say about half of all petrol stations sell LPG. Its true that LPG cars consume more than their petrol counterparts but LPG is less than half the price of petrol. The good thing with LPG that I forgot to mention is that you can turn back to regular...

    Review of new Toyota Prius

It should be theoretically possible to charge a car from a distance by using suitable coils, but in practice would probably present a load of other problems, such as that of the coil's magnetic field for a start.

    Review of new Toyota Prius

Diesel cars are popular because they are not much more expensive than their petrol counterparts to buy, you can fill up at any gas station, and the mileage and service intervals are better than petrol engines. A hybrid or electric solution is obviously better for the environment but expensive...

    Review of new Toyota Prius

Just a matter of what you're used to. Note, I didn't say it was a fast car - or at least I didn't mean it. What I meant was that for a modern car of that power, or more importantly of that gas mileage, it is much faser than what one would expect. e.g. other cars that remotely approach 75mpg...

    Review of new Toyota Prius

Hi, 80hp is peak power, but turbodiesels have lots of torque low down and feel faster than they are - for example, the overtaking 30-50 performance of this model is slightly better than the 1.6 litre version with 105hp - even though their 0-60 times are 12 and under 10 seconds respectively...

    Review of new Toyota Prius

The Renault Clio common rail turbo diesel that I rented last year was claimed 75mpg at 50mph ;) I put £5 worth of fuel (under 2 gallons) and did over 130 miles of hard driving before giving it back - there was only a few drops of fuel already in it when I picked it up and just a bit more when I...

    Review of new Toyota Prius

Since any modern vehicle can lock its wheels up on a dry surface, I think its mostly down to the tyres and suspension. I agree with you but in contrast with SUVs, one in 500 cars is a Bentley so its not so significant. Unfortunately the EU set a new upper limit to emmisions a couple of years...

    Review of new Toyota Prius

Its a very good Cd but not spectacular - Opel's Calibra from the early 90's had an identical coefficient: Does it?? Bugatti has an obsession with four turbos. Thier old EB110SS developed well over 600hp from a 3500cc quad turbo V12, they used this engine size and cylinder count because...

    Advancement in cooling technology

The ATX form factor is the limiting factor IMO. Hopefuly BTX will help remedy that by using a 92mm fan to funnel cooler outside air directly over the large CPU heatsink. ATX is limiting PSU fan to 80mm (excepting the FSP x00-60PN PSUs with 120mm fan but that is not ideal either, extracting hot...

    How long do CDRs last?

TDK uses various factories - sometimes they are Ritek, others they are decent ( I dont quite remember what manufacturer - but I had checked it with CDR Info and it was good. Perhaps TDK themselves, or even Taiyo Yuden.) I believe they were blue on the bottom and made in Japan.

    New toys

The Papst 8412 series is rather rubbish (personal opinion). Papst are not all that they are said to be for sizes below 92mm. The 8412 creates little static pressure so its airflow in practice sucks. They also vibrate quite a bit. I would really recommend using a Panaflo L1A rated at 21dB...
