    New monster build

My main rig (in my sig under Work1) has found a buyer. I have a couple weeks to build a new system for myself. From what I can tell, the CPU to get is the 4770K (unless there is some awesome overclockable Xeon I'm not aware of). I still like Gigabyte boards, so the G1.Sniper 5 seems the...

That is sexy. Can't find a price anywhere, and I suspect it is way outside of my range. The US distributor is a 3-hour drive away (Berkeley) so it wouldn't be tough to take the bike up there and have them fit it.

    Cycling

My cassette is a 11-28, and I long for my 12-32 on most days. Beyond 25% grade I can't sit at all in 39-28. The local monster climb means standing for 30+ minutes at a time; not efficient. I wouldn't mind larger gaps between the gears; my useful range is pretty large at this point. Putting a...

    Cycling

And that is the ugly, local ride. My Saturday ride through Pebble Beach is probably the prettiest in the country. Once you start going over 15-20 miles you really need a proper road bike and some appropriate clothing (padding/breathing). Otherwise you will not be enjoying yourself. Once you get...

    Cycling

I set up routes with climbs because it punishes me for my extra weight (probably 25 extra pounds at the moment, 220 total). Of course, that does lead to some awesome downhills. It seems I'm cadence limited at about 49mph (50 in front, 11 in the rear). Might be time to switch to a standard in front.

    Home NAS

If all you want is a backup solution, just go for USB and use the computer it is connected to to "pull" the data from the various machines. Centralized management is a good thing. If you want to step up to a NAS and centralized storage, I really like the Synology products. Of course at that...

Tonight's ride with some pictures. Haven't built up the nerve to ride with my DSLR, and I like posting pictures to FB while I'm riding (another way to encourage people to ride with me), so I bought a Canon S110 with WiFi. Pairs directly to my phone in the field...

No idea. It may be limited but I thought that the main determining factor was the GPU, which is on the CPU, and certainly does support higher resolutions.

Pretty sure that onboard DVI connector is a dual-link? If so, all you would need is a dual-link cable.

Nice call Tannin. Only thing different from my latest is to put an SSD in the laptop and a big disk in the expansion bay. Actually, the ultrabay usually contains a battery, but the drive is there if I need it.

    Data recovery from IDE drive

When connecting the drive directly to a native IDE port the machine halts before completing post. It first shows the drive, and it passes a SMART test in the BIOS, but halts on a blank screen (sometimes with a blinking cursor) when attempting to boot with the drive connected.

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

It should, but that is the highest load it will likely be put under. There won't be any transcoding or CPU intensive stuff. Would be interesting to watch the on-board graphics puke on some 4k gaming I suppose ;)

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

I have a few of the Corsair closed loop systems, and have been quite pleased with them. Excellent temps, good noise profile, and I like being able to relocate the CPU fan/radiator to direct airflow elsewhere (in my case chassis exhaust).

    Planning for future storage requirements

You also need to take into account how much of your data is accumulated, and how much is fixed. But the company data drives have increased 10x in the same time; now that...
