Onboard HDMI - Are we there yet?

Well I think one thing we have all learnt is that when it comes to claims of HDMI multichannel lossless/bitstreaming, until it's actually reviewed and tested to work it's all a bunch of empty promises.

Onboard HDMI - Are we there yet?

AMD integrates their Unified Video Decoder 2.0 (UVD 2.0) capabilities into the 780G. UVD 2.0 offers hardware acceleration for decoding VC-1, H.264 (AVC), WMV, and MPEG-2 sources up to 1080p resolutions. Advanced de-interlacing is available when using a Phenom processor. We generally found CPU...

Onboard HDMI - Are we there yet?

Pretty sure only the AMD based boards provide multi-channel lossless audio through the HDMI port. If you can switch to AM3 then something like this with the 4200 video should outperform the i3 video, I believe it supports the AMD UVD1 spec (which covers AVC blu-ray decoding etc), the current...

GTX295? That's a very hot running, end of life type of card. You will note Newegg has no stock of it. Basically nvidia had to make something ultra powerful so they put together the 295. Unfortunately it's rare as hen's teeth because it wasn't a volume production card, they basically released it...

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

Sorry I wasn't clear. The 5770 is an ATI video card. I'm not up to date on the current state of the art when it comes to Xeon processors anymore. However on the topic of CPUs, with the i7 you are getting four cores. With a dual board, you could get 8. The mobo pricing is already high anyway...

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

It's optional to support a chipset feature. What is your monitor situation? I would recommend a 5770 (make sure it supports Eyefinity). If you find that not enough (and I haven't had the need yet), you can add a second 5770, to basically get the equivalent of a 5870. BTW you may need a new...

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

Not a bad price for the latter (with the PCI-X as well as the PCI-E). I would hold off for a few weeks, the 6 core Opterons coming on to the market should cause the Xeons to drop in price.

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

BTW you will find many tasks such as ripping/burning dvds etc take almost no CPU time, as it is a DMA operation. With video, again most of the heavy lifting is off loaded to the GPU. Now re-encoding video, that does take some CPU cycles.

i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

I would recommend keeping the PCI-X cards in your current system, use it as a file server/second system. Start afresh with PCI-e v2 and a modern mobo. It's impossible to define a cpu by just a single number.

ATI CCC Advanced Mode on Server 2008 R2 x64

Does your card support Eyefinity? My understanding is that to do this you need two monitors connected via DVI and/or HDMI and the third via displayport. The 5000 series currently having two timing sources for displays, DP provides the third. Not all cards can do the three monitor Eyefinity.

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

My comment was regarding receivers. 3D, 2K and 4K rez support seem to be the biggies, along with ethernet over hdmi (which requires new cables). For a TV as a computer screen now, 1.3 is fine and dandy, and certainly delivers TrueHD and DTS Master Audio with no problems.
