Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

PS3 plays content fine from a Linux box running ps3mediaserver. Gigabit ethernet is fine for performance. You can also copy content from network to ps3 hard drive. What do you mean by content on demand?

Which model ps3 are you talking about? Launch models from 2006 with 90nm cell/gpu can get loud - 200W of heat to reject, especially when upconverting dvds. I have a 40gb model which is 65nm cell and 90nm gpu. It is silent, even running folding at home in it's spare time. The current ps3 model -...

    iPhone syndrome

Head to Walmart. They have a ton of no contract phones and minutes. If you need the Verizon network then they have ones where you pay a dollar a day and no charge for days you don't use it. About $15 or $20. If you lose it, no biggie.

SSDs - State of the Product?

"Didn't seem to hose anything on my system though." Pretty sad when that can be described as progress on Intel's part Max :)

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

I assume you are talking about a DVD input? Plug in the bunny ears and you should be able to pull in some admittedly low bitrate (max of 18mbit/sec) OTA HDTV in 1080i or 720p. Should look significantly sharper than the DVDs, will do until you pick up a blu-ray player (which can deliver you...

IMAX uses horizontal polarization. RealD 3D uses circular polarization. Dolby 3D puts the costly tech in the glasses - custom filters etc, and apparently has the best results. The circular polarization allows for the dipping of the head etc without ill effects. Be aware there's two types of...

    UPS Help

If it's failing in the same UPS, can you try it in another one? It may be that the charging circuitry etc has been fubared in the current UPS you are having trouble with. If under warranty I would insist on a replacement by APC.

How about down under? Plus several airlines now deliver wifi for pay during flights. I was looking at that "Spot" beacon they advertise for the extreme adventurer, further investigation shows that it's GPS reception is indeed "spotty", and it uses the Globalstar constellation of sats for...

Interesting. I'm guessing you are closer to the boss than the said manager. Personally I have no time for low performers either. I would much rather be able to look at myself in the mirror each morning than work for a tard.

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

Can I ask why you need a lightlight? Night terrors? I was sure that SureFire used to have this: http://www.surefire.com/SC1-Spares-Carrier But with a very low wattage incandescent bulb. For multiple days of survival lighting. Perhaps something like this: http://www.surefire.com/lightLX2 47...

Enterprise Backup solution for multiple laptops?

Oh absolutely. FDE is not a replacement for backups. But for management, it's the difference between being plastered on the news with a data breach, plus notification to relevant parties etc, and letting someone know that their precious file they've been working on all weekend has gone titsup...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Greg, let me save you the money by saying the 3ware card won't get to 1.5GB/sec, because the controller will give up at far less than that, seems like a max of ~700MB/sec seems likely. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/3ware-9690sa.html Notice the processor running at 233MHz...

Enterprise Backup solution for multiple laptops?

Whole disk encryption is what my last org went to. There was an initial hit on performance as the drive(s) were encrypted, after that it was seamless to the end users. They just logged on as normal into Windows. If the laptop was stolen, without the login credentials it was junk in terms of...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

They will have 3D capability in the smaller models as well. Given it is basically an upgrade to the HDMI transmitter chip in the TV, there is a very small increase in the cost of parts for the manufacturer. There are also the shutter glasses to acquire. The announcement of new products at CES...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Greg, it's 120 Hz. If you are not in a big rush hold off till Feb next year. The upcoming gen will accept a 120 Hz input signal, allowing it to display 1080p 3d at 60 Hz - 60 frames to left and right eyes. High bitrate 1080p is delivered via blu-ray.

    Remote disks...

It's still not possible to get the port density of FC in 10g ethernet. You might be looking at 5 10G ports per switch card, versus upto 48 ports and beyond in 4/8Gbit FC. What's happening is that you can use 10g ethernet in your core network and director switches, and then have FC switches in...

Moving to iscsi will limit you to gigabit speeds and below. Prob not an issue unless you are capturing uncompressed video etc. Also SSDs will reveal limitations in controllers that magnetic hdds have trouble hitting. Decide your IOPS requirements. Add room for growth. Make sure vendor agrees that their proposed solution will meet those reqs, in writing. And of course a SAN is not a replacement for a tested backup solution with offsite storage.

    24GB+ of RAM?

Yeah with redundant power you have to overprovision by 2x. Costly but what is uptime worth to a critical process? Dual Cat 1.5MWs was the biggest I got to play with. Keep a good eye on the batts Dave.

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

No win 2000 drivers but if you have 2003 or later it's fine. I would suggest a few weeks to get any potential firmware bugs sorted before buying. LSI is widely used in the enterprise sector.

    Wiring a house for LED

That's crazy prices for one room of lighting. A couple of 8 bulb T5 flo fixtures would be half the price, whilst allowing you to customise the color frequency - mix up 6500 and 4100K tubes etc. Aquarium store should have them for tank lighting to demo
