    FireFox v1.0.7 - something buggy

    DVD Decoder.

If we're talking about for use with film based material, it is my opinion that the Dscaler 5 decoder is tops of the class. BTW, if you're open to the suggestion of using another media player, Media Player Classic has built in decoders that are very good too...probably based on the libmpeg2...

    How evil is .Net?

I suspect some further clarity is needed here - and I'm not necessarily the person to provide that, but I'll give it a go: WMV is a bit confusing. Essentially its a codec, and one that employs a high degree of compression. From versions 7 up to, but not including, version 9, MS molded wmv...

    Big Ad

Were the Simpsons a source of inspiration for the Big Ad? There's a strong similarity between the humanoid shape which drinks the pint of beer in the Big Ad and the animated character in the supposed 1950's Duff Brewery's beer commercial --> "Only Duff fills your "Q zone" with pure beer...

Well, I tried to find a link but couldn't, so anyways: there has been a Rickards Red beer commercial featuring O Fortuna running here for the last several months. There is also currently a Coca-Cola commerical that does the running-people-that-from-the-air-look-like-a-animated-picture thing...

    "An ornithological production" or "Something

Sorry, I wasn't aware they had a DRM prerequisite in order to obtain acceleration ... I guess that goes to show how much interest I have in WMV Completely agree .... but unfortunately there are hoards of jackasses in the world that will go for the carrot

    "An ornithological production" or "Something

You should, in theory, have no problems playing this back. WMV9/VC1 is not as taxing as AVC....however, it does seem to mysteriously present some challenges to some systems which should be way more then adequate...there has got to be some low level software conflict in its code going on, as...

    "An ornithological production" or "Something

I'm pretty sure mplayer is rendering every frame, however, just not at the intended 24 or 29.97 fps (or whatever the source was) ... hence why the audio is finishing well before the video is finished.

    Rollcall: who is running what?

Umm, no. AMD announced the new chips back in July. I put a 64 bit Sempron 2800 754 in a system I built for a friend back in early August, which was just a short while after they first became available in TO.

Tannin, just download one of Celtic_druid's recent builds of Mplayer for windows then (~3.5MB). Extract to a folder, drop to cmd line and then use the cmd: mplayer "path\filename.mov" Its a very nice vid and music.

    "An ornithological production" or "Something

I just made a visual comparison: - QT's decoders are definitely the least appealing - Mplayer seems to produce the best picture --> incidents of macroblocking are less noticeable (especially evident in the froggy scene, which is horrid with QT) and the colours are more vibrant - ffdshow is...

Future NEC DVD burners -- Caveat Emptor !

Things change. LiteOn commoditized the CD-burner - and did so by offering a product that worked just as well, if not better then its competitors. However, dvd-burners are the soup du jour, and they too have "long" since been commoditized. In the process, companies like Benq have come to...

Yes, all the time! MPC is a wonderful directshow media player. One of the most useful features is the fact that It has a very good dvd (MPEG2) decoder built into it (although I disable it an use the Dscaler5 decoder). It also has capturing functionality, but it has never worked for me...

Merc, ask her what jre version she has running. Back in the good old days of Firefox v1.0.4 I found that Sun's v1.5.0.03 to often yeild the same errors. Once I updated to the more recent v1.5.0.04 jre, all those errors disappeared. As for the current suspicious behaviour I'm observing -...
