    Outlook + Gmail

Has anyone successfully used Outlook to access Gmail? POP3 isn't an option because it assumes a single client device, so I'm looking at IMAP, or is there some way to connect with ActiveSync (MS Exchange protocol)? From what I've read so far, Outlook 2003 sort of managed IMAP okay, but Outlook...

Merging two vintage systems for donation

For starters, you could overclock the hell out of that XP1700. It will probably hit 2GHz without even raising the CPU voltage. That's my recollection anyway. But have you checked all the capacitors carefully? M$ will sell you a copy of XP (don't know what the restrictions are), but given that...

    Viore HD 1080p 60HZ lc40vf80 for 389 at costco?

The Panasonic TC-L32U3 is 1920x1080 and an IPS panel to boot. Note the 'U' in the model code, the same applies to the L37U3 and the L42U30. Expensive for a TV, but a bargain as a monitor. Greg, the Panasonic you saw at CostCo would not have been native 1920x1080 - a L32U3 starts at $400 or so...

    MP3 player rant

Personally, I think the new iPod Nano screen is way too small for a touch interface. Touchpads are never that small for that very reason; trying to flick to scroll would be really tedious. If you want capable hardware, how about the Creative Zen Touch 2. It runs Android and has a GPS option. :)

    Case for a Gigabyte G1.Assassin

Greg, you don't need lots of fans, you just need to ensure adequate cooling of certain components. These days, unless you're using a 1U rackmount, the graphics cards are far and away what needs the most cooling. In many cases, you simply don't need extra fans to support normal CPUs. And people...

    1. At 695mm, the LianLi will fit under most - but not all - desks, apparently including yours if it's 2-3cm taller. I must admit though, that I was visualizing the smaller X1000. 2. You mean HEC 98R9, not HEC 89R9. 3. I agree with you, the HEC would have been a no-brainer for me. 4. Discussion...

    Replacement laptop keys

I need to find some replacement key tops / caps for a Dell laptop. Dell doesn't sell the keys separately, there's a two-month wait to get a replacement keyboard, and it will cost about $150. I found some vendors in the US that sell cheap replacement keyboards, but one wanted about $100 shipping...

I have one here and it's a PITA. Unpredictable operation. But you should have a fighting chance if the TV is the master, assuming <1W standby vs >100W operating.

    Need an Amp

"Is this device worth a damn?" Yes, surprisingly. It has a 5270 Joule surge rating. If you had really expensive equipment attached, it might be worth it to those who are risk-averse. I don't know why you'd need the power conditioning part though?

CougTek, I don't know what you're smoking, but the X2000F is 83% of the size of the P80. Without even seeing one, I know it would be easier to handle a thinner case than a fat one, regardless of height. 63 x 64cm is not at all easy to manage on a back seat. :p

Warren Buffett's opinion. Similar to what they're doing in Italy, which is increasing taxes by 5% for people earning over 100,000 euros and 10% for those over 200,000 euros. And this despite the Prime Minister previously pledging to never do so.

Timing of building a new system

Mubs, if you buy direct from Crucial, you can return any defective components to them and they will ship out a replacement or repair (depending on age). It's often faster than trying to return through the retail channel and definitely a lot less hassle. I believe India is served by the Crucial...

Timing of building a new system

Seriously, you really don't need a separate video card for your stated usage, especially if you can stretch to one of the K suffix CPUs (2500K or 2600K) that comes with HD 3000 graphics. Even the default HD 2000 is quite enough for non-FPS-game usage. They both support dual monitors with your...

    USB 3.0 Cases

Anandtech actually tested with a GTX580 - the cooling was excellent, so it doesn't seem like DD is taking any kind of risk here. Also, it's worth remembering that a standard ATX PSU is actually just 140mm deep. As capacity increases, the depth goes to 150, 160 and even 170mm. A Seasonic X750 is...

Timing of building a new system

Don't you need the Antec Two Hundred case to get dust filters? Bozo, that Xeon is a sharp pickup. Unfortunately, it has no IGP - for that you need the E3-1245, which is more expensive. And from the sounds of it, Mubs doesn't need anything more than IGP.

    USB 3.0 drives

I can't prove it's 7200 rpm, that's just what most of the references say. It could well be just a fast 5400rpm drive, after all, the F4 EcoGreen is pretty quick. On the other hand, Samsung released a 640GB 2-platter 7200rpm 2.5" drive about 15 months ago. A 1TB model would be essentially just...

    USB 3.0 drives

Sorry MaxBurn, I didn't see your earlier post. AFAIK, the Samsung S2 series used 5400rpm drives for USB 2.0 but 7200rpm drives for USB 3.0. As you say, they easily exceed 100MB/s sustained transfer rates. Lunar, unless you can produce similar figures from your WD, I'm going to go on believing...

    America is ungovernable

That's exactly the sort of thing I meant when I said tax deductions should not be 'government incentives'. You should only be able to claim expenses essential to earn your income, and nothing in excess of that. Mortgages are a living expense, not a work expense. I believe this refers to...

    America is ungovernable

The US government has been borrowing money since 1917. Just like successful private enterprises, that's often essential.
