Yes, check out the Android NDK. You may not be able to build the entire application in C/C++, but you can embed the compiled binary in a simple Java wrapper to make it work.

I haven't used GNOME in years, but I like KDE 4.6 a lot. I've been running KDE since 4.2 and couldn't be happier. I have to use Windows XP at work and it pisses me off every day. I would much rather have a linux based system with KDE, but pigs will fly first.

    Android Tablets

I stream music through Subsonic on my Android phone. It will also stream video, I have tried it and it works, but don't use it regularly. It uses the browser with Flash to stream video and can transcode to lower bitrates. It's OSS, however, you need to donate a minimum of 10€ to get a license...

question HDD thermal management (keeping your cool)

You could buy a condo. Many of the problems of home ownership are handled by a management company or the condo board. We own a condo in a 11 unit building and it's really not like owning a single family house. I am also the association treasurer, but that was my choice.

    Android Tablets

The Asus TF101-A1 (16GB storage) for ~$450 seems like a good deal. I don't think I would pay $150 for double the storage. Especially when it has a 4-in-1 card reader. I still think tablets are ridiculously expensive compared with a $300 netbook.
