    Firewire networking and CPU util

Well I finally hooked up the POS 1.6GHz P4 laptop to the dual Athlon 1.47s, using Firewire. I'm getting about 10MB/sec. Bigger problem is that the cpu util on the laptop is around 90%, with the System process sucking up a good 70-80%. On the duallie, it's at about 30% (explorer process says it's...

http://www.x86-secret.com/articles/cpu/opteron/opteron-5.htm Looking at that review it looks like the processor to beat is the Banias aka P-M, at least for SETI. I don't know how it fares with FAH however. The current performance of the Opteron leaves me underwhelmed.

I believe one of the reasons why the Autobahns are reasonably safe is that the automobile association or whatever they call it there funds many rescue choppers. So if you do get in a crash and survive, they can get you to a hospital pretty quickly. Add to that the relative newness of the cars...

    Can't sleep, what to do

I find that a bladder has a second wind. i.e you can be busting to go, you hold it in for a while, and then the urge reduces. You are then good to go for a while longer. Of course when you do finally go, you really go.

Good choice for cheap monitor or LCD...

With an LCD panel, there is one native resolution and thats usually 1280*1024 for the 17-18" panels, and 1024*768 for the 15" ones. Keep in mind that native LCD rez looks bloody brilliant, whereas running a CRT at it's max rez will often result in a blurry eye killing mess, simply because it is...

GRRR: Trying to install both Adaptec UW card, and ATTO LVD..

I only wondered because usually the HBA would have SCSI ID 7. Could save confusion later on if you shuffle things around. If the card looks for the drive at ID 0 to boot, and the card itself is at 0, it may shititself? Was your external SCSI box running ATTO RAID previously?

Aussies are guinea pigs for software anti-piracy

As it doesn't affect volume licensed product, pirates won't have any problems with the activation scenario. Also PS7 has been out for a while now, I would think that anyone upgrading would have done so by now. I like the part where when the product is discontinued, all activations are auto...

[NEWZ] More On The SAS Front (Maxtor, Seagate)

I believe till at least the U160 spec, that the commands and status were sent at a much slower asynchornous rate compared to the synchronous data. This was rectified with U320 by using packetised SCSI, allowing multiple commands to be sent in a single connection.

[NEWZ] More On The SAS Front (Maxtor, Seagate)

I guess the benefit is that the drive could receive commands at the same time as it is sending data down the pipe. No need to "wait" for the drive to become available.

Getting a Windows Refund in California Small Claims Court

You can get Dell servers with no OS at all. But I take your point that a Dell laptop comes with winXP, and you can't deselect it. Therefore the price of winXP is included in the price, whether you want it or not. It just goes to show that the EULA is unenforceable garbage, it was aprobably a...
