Generally unless you do something pretty stupid an SUV is not going to roll over. I find having a higher seating position helps when looking over snowbanks at intersections, more chance of seeing another vehicle coming along. Nissan Murano gets 20MPG in city, not exactly an economy vehicle. And...

Need recommendation: LCD that does 1600x1200

I second the 2000FP, awesome clarity. Only problem you may find is that pure black is more a milky gray, but that's a prob with all LCD panels.

Dual LAN? Is that 10/100 or 1000BaseT? TigerMP(X) is OK but memory performance is lacking compared to the latest single CPU mobos.

    802.11A or G?

IIRC there was an article in the Inq talking about how the .11g standard hasn't really been finalised, especially in relation to interoperability. So what ever the manufacturers put out right now may not work with other manu's equipment. I'm awaiting the introduction of a combo .11a/.11b PC Card.

    Windows .Net Server?

I got my copy of RC2 thru my Action Pack subscription. Comes with a product key that is good for 10 activations, and it works for 360 days. It comes with all server services turned off, you have to use the wizard to select the things you want to run. It boots just as fast for me as winXP did...

http://forums.storagereview.net/viewtopic.php?t=5734&p=85513 That's the link to the results I had if anyone else is interested. Just scroll to the bottom. Three times faster copying a file to the same drive, when compared to winXP Pro. I remember why I bought SCSI again :)

Hardware innovations you'd like to see become mainstream

Well for consumer audio/video, it loks like DVI with HDCP will be the way forward. The studios are happy because with the encryption nothing can be recorded directly in digital. There is also Firewire with encryption, used to connect things like D-VHS decks to HDTVs, the encryption kicks in when...

    Windows .Net Server?

I wonder what Eugene will say when faced with the sad reality that SCSI and winXP really is a shit combo. :mrgrn: Another I like about .NEt Server is that the networking seems much more intelligent. I just told it to connect to the Net via LAN (ICS on the winXP laptop) and it worked out the...

If you were to buy a laptop: brand?

SXGA+ on a 14" would be like UXGA on a 15" I guess. Not too bad. Now there was an option to get UXGA on the 14" screen, that would be small. Apps just need to be written better, with the advent of higher resolution screens.

    Windows .Net Server?

Well I have .Net Enterprise Server build 3178 running. It needed some pursuading tho, didn't seem to like being told to install on a SCSI disk when there were IDE drives attached. So it's running off a 5400rpm WD 1200AB. First thoughts: Built-in drivers for Radeon AIW 7500. PowerDVD 4.0...

    Front page info XP3000+

Well the performance improvement is pretty disappointing really. Hopefully AMD can ramp up the MHz soon, because it's pretty sad when the non-Barton with a lower PR number outperforms in a few benchmarks. That 64 bit bus between CPU and L2 has to be upgraded.

    Serial Attached SCSI

I was reading that SA-SCSI increases the cable length from the 1m of S-ATA to 6m. But how will this affect external devices that currently on LVD can be up to 12/25M depending on the number of devices attached? Or will SA-SCSI be pretty much an internal connection?

    Car Accident

Well the idea of the seatbelt is to increase the amount of time over which the body decelerates, thereby reducing the forces applied to the unfortunate individual. i.e. car hits power pole, and stops in 0.01 secs. Very large force. Individual stops in 0.1 secs, much less force. Well you get the...

Win2k problems with USB Storage Device

Chkdsk /f worked fine for me on my Microdrive when it misbehaved and had a few bad sectors. One thing I have noticed is that things like Firewire external drives etc work much more reliably when running winXP compared to win2k. What is the digicam and media used?

    HP laserJet 4p any opinions?

4P is very slow. You could email the seller and ask him for a page count. If you have a bit more money you could get a Lexmark OptraS 1625 or similar for around ~$100-$150. Much faster, postscript capable, network ready, and perhaps with duplex installed. 7000 page toner cart should last you a...

    Videocards for dual displays

The GF4 MX line has pretty bad 2D quality, at least compared to ATI. The non-MX is apparently OK. What is your primary monitor? I assume an LCD because 1280*1024 on a 4:3 CRT monitor is going to give you oval circles on screen. Do you need DVI?

    should I use a VPN

I don't see how Zone Alarm will protect your wireless link. The problem is that the WEP encryption built into 802.11b is trivially broken. I don't know whther they fixed it for 802.11g or a. Best to be sure and use a secondary security system. For your home network you could just use a...

Barton appears on my price list.

Just like with Intel, AMD can now afford to charge a premium for their fastest product. Only the hard core and those that must have the fastest x86 FPU available will buy the 3000+. Joe 6 pak will keep on buying the ~500 dollar complete machines.

I'm pretty happy with my Dell Insiporn 8200 as well. Though there were initial problems with the dial up modem hard locking the machine due to line conditions. And the p4 1.6GHz is a sloth of a thing, what I would give for a decent Athlon mobile CPU in here!
