    Dell Warranty...worth it?

Yes I agree that with font scaling, poorly written applications don't look good at all. I'm running at 120% scaling, The only apps I notice are fuxored is PS 6 (some of the menu bars), and ironically, Windows Update download windows which are quite a challenge to use. There was also a problem...

TYAN Tiger MPX S2466-4M, problem with BIOS rev. 4.03?

Shocking. IMO the TigerMP shouldn't be run with anything but Reg. memory. Now the MPX may permit the use of two unbuffered modules, but for maximum stability Reg ECC is definitely a requirement. I think it is time to tell your customer that you cannot take responsibility for the stability of...

    Dell Warranty...worth it?

Well the only real reason you would run in less than UXGA would be to get decent performance out of games, and if the video card is capable of good performance at UXGA then there is no need surely :) I also have a Dell 2000FP 20" UXGA panel, and the blacks on this laptop are far superior to the...

    Dell Warranty...worth it?

Go with the 32MB GF4 Go, it is much faster than the older GF2 GO. Well worth the $70 or so dollars. Also because everything looks like crap at non-native rez, you need all the grunt possible to run everything smooth at UXGA. It plays a DVD on the video out while I use the LCD for work without...

    Dell Warranty...worth it?

If you are clumsy and think you may need it, the Complete Cover warranty from Dell is very good, it covers accidental damage like your laptop falling off the couch etc. Anything that isn't deliberate, or caused by fire or theft. The Dell 15" UXGA screen spare part costs around US$699 to give you...

    Some observations on power supplies

I got a Leadman 500W once. Lasted a couple of days and then crack, the smell of ozone, and no power. When I took the PSU out, there was something rattling inside. Managed to extract it thru one of the vent holes, looks like a piece of black plastic that had blown apart. My recommendation: avoid.

    Tape Backup Solutions

The best bang for buck I have seen in tape backup is the Excrix VXA series of drives/tapes. They have a new version, the VXA-2, the drive is from US$999 for internal SCSI version. One 80GB (160GB compressed) tape is US$89. Now cheap 5400 rpm IDE drives in carriers will be cheaper, but still...

Isn't Tora Bora in the Pacific? I guess it must be in Afghanistan if Bin Laden was there. The military did use FAE's there, which pretty much have the destructive power of a very low yield nuke, without the fallout.

I cannot beat Dell in the budget segment.

The mere fact that Dell pays around $50 (I can't remember the exact figure) for a copy of WinXP makes it exceptionally difficult to compete in the low end.

    Anti SUV site

Tony no taxes have been removed from petrol. There was an automatic increase in the excise (tax), I believe every 6 months. This has been abolished (and rightly so, it was increasing at a far greater rate than the CPI). I believe it also had to do with the fact that petrol was more expensive...

    Whose war on whose terrorism?

    Anti SUV site

Are you reffering to the end of the auto increase in the petrol excise to correspond with the CPI? That excise was a tax on a tax, a frigging disgrace and should have been removed a long time ago. I thank jebus every day that I don't live in the UK with their insane 300% tax on petrol.

    Whose war on whose terrorism?

I don't understand why having armed air marshalls on flights is a bad thing? They reintroduced em after the Black September hijackings, and AFAIK there wasn't a single hijacking on a US airline till Sept 11th (by which time the program was running with just a handful of marshalls, apparently...

    TAXES

The GST in Australia has moved the onus of tax collection from the tax office onto the small business owners who can least afford to spare the time and effort. And Kerry Packer still doesn't pay a single cent of tax in Australia. If you have the money and influence you can get away with it.

HardOCP reviews Radeon 9700 Pro on a 2.48GHz Athlon!

Geforce 4 Ti 4400 bites the dust

The current ATI drivers seem to be OK. Now the biggest problem occurs when upgrading them (I don't know if your customers do that). Burner not burning

That's not how the zero coaster systems work, they just carry on from where they paused, there is no extra session. No lead out/lead in. Otherwise when you open up a CD that has had a couple of burn proof events, there could be 5 or ten different sessions.
