    Smoking

We recently banned smoking in the clubhouse at the shooting club I belong to. It did cause a lot of grief from some of the older members, and we did lose a few of them because of it. Personally I'm not a rabid anti-smoking nut, it's just that as a member of the comittee, I had a duty of care to...

    What modem to get?

A lot of companies have their own high speed standard. My Toshiba goes into "High Speed" mode when it finds a fellow Toshiba on the other end. And uses G3 for others.

LOL, no need to panic Cliptin, I was just joking about what would happen if Mercutio's list of terrible things were to really happen to win2k.

    Windows? Insecure?

While I enjoy using win2k (and winXP to a smaller extent) I would be the first to agree with you that I would never store any secrets pertaining to national security on an MS OS.

    What modem to get?

Merc: For your LT modems, try this driver, I found it fixed a nasty problem of hanging my insiporn 8200 on disconnecting. http://www.agere.com/support/client/modem_driver2.html

    Windows? Insecure?

Well once you have executed malicious code or have lost physical security of the machine then you are farked for sure. A truly secure computer is not connected to a network at all, certainly not the Internet.

The auto updating of the OS by MS can be turned off. As for AOL, I won't be able to sleep tonight with the nightmares. Can you just imagine, you disconnect the network cable and the whole computer just hangs, forcing a hard reset.

    Need Recommendation For A UPS

You should be able to grab a Conext (APC rebadge I believe) 900VA for less than US$150. They have a 700VA model for less. Has a serial connection and comes with cable and software for shutdown. Appears to the OS as an APC Back-Ups.

    Vacuum Tube Motherboard?

I don't think digital can compete with film for large blow ups of images. A 6 MP camera is okay for A3 perhaps, anything bigger ain't too good. Perhaps in a couple of years. Unless we are talking about a Hasselblad with 20 MP back or some such esoterica.
