They're officially called "Modern Style Applications", I think. Some of them are even pretty nice, like News Bento or Netflix. You also have to remember that modern style programs aren't being made for you. They're being made for younger people who have grown up with Xbox 360 and mobile devices...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

Online FPS games that aren't requesting map textures in every new game aren't going to contribute to bandwidth utilization in any kind of meaningful way. The mid and late 90s games in particular were designed to be playable over dialup speed connections. Five minutes of Pandora probably creates...

Yeah. It's god awful, especially if you regularly switch between external network configurations. Would you want to walk an end user through reconfiguring their vSwitches? The desktop version also doesn't support clipboard sharing. We're supposed to do everything through RDP, but if I...

I'm going to make my class tomorrow about installing it. I have a couple crappy notebooks and a desktops from early C2D to lga1150 i3 systems and it'll be fun for everyone to see what it will run on. Also, unlike any beta version of Windows I can remember, it supports an upgrade install from 7...

    Windows 10

Talking about Windows versions in common release you have Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, 7 and 8, so the next one would be the 10th major launch. Maybe? One of my big concerns is the extent to which software will be deployed from the Windows Store vs. normal updates. I also want to...

This can be the thread about Windows 10. I'm sure we'll need one of those. So far, what we know is that it has an unholy combination of start menu and start screen, modern style apps can be made to run in windows, virtual desktop support, apps can be docked to corners and the standard console...

Something weird about Windows RT/Modern-style Windows apps: My Microsoft account exposes a certain amount of music that managed to be saved in the standard C:\users\username\music Library from whichever machine I accidentally saved music into that folder from. So that music shows up if I sign in...

    Small case build

The Prodigy is absolutely enormous for a "small" case. I have a couple that I have filled up with hard drives for off-site backup purposes. I will say that they're quiet-ish and, at least with i3 CPUs and no video card, they aren't a problem as far as heat management.

    Best movie you've seen

Days of Future Past was way, way better than I had anticipated. I'd be perfectly happy to ditch Wolverine-centric movies in favor of the McAvoy/Fassbender/Lawrence cast and in fact I love the period piece setting. Yes this is the movie thread. I'm going to talk about TV now. Cope. Agents of...

Microsoft's high level run-time is .NET, which is implemented on other platforms as Mono. It's more of a competitor to Java than a full application ecosystem. I thought the Nexus 9 compared unfavorably to the FireHDX 8.9. It has a 4:3 screen it's kind of miserly in terms of display DPI for a high end device, and on top of that it's pretty heavy for its size, but then the FireHDX isn't Google-licensed and most models don't have GPS (and none have a...
