problem A desktop drive is on the desktop's network, but not on either laptop's network!

For what it's worth, both Sharing and Security permission changes take effect immediately, but authentication tokens are not refreshed until either a shutdown or logout/login has occurred. I just spent 45 today tearing my hair out because a remote user didn't understand the difference between...

I'd say that the Evo is adequate for everything. If you think an Evo is slow, try working with a BN Nook (800MHz) or one of those $80 generic tablets with half the RAM.

    Pagefile and SSDs

Architecturally, Windows likes to have a pagefile, whether it's needed or not. My SOP for solid state drives is to provision one on a secondary magnetic disk and disable the one on the SSD. I avoid wear on the SSD that way but still have the pagefile if I need it.

This is the thread for the discussion of interesting apps.

It's difficult to justify and frankly other than games it's doubtful that there's any need. The expectation in the market is that tier-1 OEM devices may have anything from a single core 1GHz ARM to a 1.7GHz quad core, but any normal app needs to work just fine with the low end of that range...

    Seagate bad RMA service

Whereas good RMA service is of course the only reason to buy a WD drive, being that concrete bricks serve better as both magnetic data storage and a building material. I will say that I haven't had a problem with a refurb drive in any recent time frame. I usually relegate them to use as backup...

Larger HDD to smaller SSD questions

That is counter to my experience with the Momentus XL, which I found to only offer improvement in terms of boot and resume time and almost no benefit for actual help for other disk-based latency.

    Best movie you've seen

I'm a big enough fan of the Lord of the Rings movies that I listen to all 12 hours of the score at least once a week, usually in a single sitting. Of course I'll go more than once. Especially when I have girls to take.

    Best movie you've seen

So far I've seen The Hobbit in 3D, IMAX 3D and un-enhanced 24fps. As usual, I'll say that the penalty of color fidelity is too high to justify the 3D experience, even if it is occasionally pretty neat. I'd like to see a 48fps showing but I don't feel like going in to Chicago for it. I was on the...

    Computer Speakers 2012

My go-to speaker set at this point is the butt ugly but marvelous-sounding Genius SW-G2.1 set. They're inexpensive but sound better than other sets that cost three times as much. Unfortunately, they ARE butt ugly.

    Google Apps For Your Domain

That is... interesting. As far as I know, there's no support in Outlook for CalDev/CardDev. I'm guessing there's a commercial addon someplace, but for as much as I hate it plenty of business systems live and die with Outlook integration. This blows.

    New even shallower screens!

For what it's worth, Samsung 210Ts (21") can be had for $99 from ebay or places that sell refurbished kit. Those guys are a huge upgrade over typical $150 22" displays.

I did a little bit of reading about it and I guess they effectively leave an open IMAP connection between compliant clients and the various GMail services for data transfer. That's how their server-side push works, anyway.

    Something Random

The big problem with OSS systems for push email is that they tend to be missing something or other. You're either going to pay money because someone actually licensed ActiveSync (e.g. Zafara) or there's a push implementation that doesn't support something-or-other or has insane package...

    USB 3.0 Cases

I'm given to understand that USB notebook docks all tend to suck, and multi-bay USB enclosures are ridiculously expensive for some reason. The Elite 120 actually has a gasket for running internal-to-external cables, so you could probably get away with rigging up some unholy combination of USB...

How to erase HDD on HP 410i controller?

On my way to visit my folks in Knoxville, I stopped at a Gas Station and Jerky Store someplace in Kentucky. I thought they might've been kidding but I had to see it. The Jerky Store was real, probably 400 square feet of floor to ceiling jerky varieties, including stuff like Chipotle Alligator...

    USB 3.0 Cases

With the Cooler Master case I'm referencing, I wouldn't want an i7 or a graphics card much over $150. I wish I could've found an ITX board with 6 SATA ports though. I actually could use all of them in that case, including the 4-in-1 bay.

    USB 3.0 Cases

So I put together a system in the Cooler Master Elite 120. It's a sweet little rig, an i5-3570 sitting on an Asus P8Z77 Deluxe, 16GB and a Radeon 7770. I put in a 4-in-1 2.5" to 5.25" bay, which is where the boot drive (a spare X25) lives. The thermals on that system aren't so great. The fan...

    Corsair SSD simultaneous failure

I've seen that one. But yeah, I have a drive that works fine if I leave it in IDE mode, but disconnects from the host if addressed using AHCI. Verified on Intel and AMD native controllers and on a JMicron controller. IIRC all the special SSD-only features of the drive are only accessible in...

Since this is the thread for talking about crapped-out Corsair drives: I have a 240GB Force GT that shits itself every time it's connected to a SATA controller in AHCI mode. I actually saw the biggest gains during transfers of small files. 3.7 million .jpg files (~1TB) took around 14 hours to copy to the Server 2012 machine and only about 12.5 hours to copy from that machine to another desktop.

Data transfer performance on Server 2012 seems to be significantly better than FreeNAS, even comparing their NFS implementations head to head. ZFS still has a lot to offer because of configurabilty, but in some of the tests I did, I saw 15MB/s better transfers out of my Windows Server.

Your DOS program will probably run just fine. The gotchas you'll run in to with legacy software have more to do with use of 16-bit drivers or libraries for Windows, or legacy code that checks for some god-awful reason checks OS version in some way that bombs on newer Windows releases.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The overall impression I have is that among the top-tier vendors, pretty much every SSD is fast enough for pretty much every normal sort of workload. Or at least that I can't really tell a subjective difference between say an Intel 330, a Samsung 820 and an OCZ Agility 3.
