question How do people buy music these days?

What's so hard about playing a bunch of sequentially named files in a directory that represents the contents of an album?

My favorite webcomic on the subject of cheap booze. Half the lines in this strip are funny even without any context.

    Something Random

In a lot of cases, simple rules exist because they're easier to understand and enforce for an audience that may not understand or tolerate nuance or complexity. I'd draw parallels to religion but it's probably unnecessary to do so here.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Apparently it will be a while before the Micron drive will be available to consumers anyway.

There's plenty of internet communities full of retards. Free Republic or the comments section on any widely-viewed Youtube video ought to prove that.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Micron just released a new mini-PCIe SSD. SR has a review posted. I'm glad that form factor is still being supported, particularly since it looks like a considerable improvement over my current Intel 310.

    2TB drives under the duopoly

Newegg has a 2TB 7200rpm Barracuda right now for less than it's selling a lot of 1TB drives. Weird pricing anomaly.

    Vomit Box: A lesson learned

No way to add an internal drive at all, sort of splitting off an external USB port and running a cable inside the case. There weren't even extra internal USB headers. I thought we had moved past systems like that, or at least started putting them in boxes where no one would think they could be...

Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

Both HP and Acer appear to have exited the WHS Appliance market. Home Server 2011 is a relatively new product but it doesn't look to me like any tier-1 OEMs are supporting it these days. Has anyone tried the 2011 version? I have a SOHO customer looking for remote desktop access to machines...

    Media Player Appliances

Lifehacker had a pretty decent article about XBMC yesterday. It's REALLY NOT that hard to work but it dips in to plugin repositories and stuff that's not immediately apparent just from looking at the program.

    Vomit Box: A lesson learned

Someone brought me a Compaq CQ-2713 this morning. I haven't seen a box this vomit-y in ages. They wanted to install a second internal hard drive and couldn't figure out how. I figured it was probably going to be one of those deals where the guy wanted to put an old IDE drive in a new desktop...

    Wireless Headphones

So you want wireless earbuds? I think that a lot of what you'll find as earbuds will be more like volume amplifiers or cellphone/gaming headphones. Maybe that's what you want. I've been told that Sennheiser's wireless headphones are pretty decent, though a lot of other quality headphone...

Yeah. That's the idea here too. I meet her at her, er, office, but not until she's back in civilian clothes and ready to head out for the day. And since I "belong" to her the other chicks there don't bother me. I might buy the girls who are working a shot or something but that costs me all of...

    April 2012 Indonesia Earthquake

I hope we don't have a repeat of 2004. That's absolutely the first thing I thought when I read about the quake. Is safety just a matter of getting to some minimum safe distance from shoreline?

    Beverages

What I came up with as "basic bar" is: Gin, Rum, Whiskey, Vodka and maybe Tequila, plus a few things to mix in. Vermouth, Bitters, Tonic Water, Lemon and/or Lime juice, Cranberry Juice, Coffee Liqueur and cola seem to be the big ones. I figure "mid-shelf" is good enough since it's not like I'm...

I've only ever seen her drink vodka and fruit juice. She distinctly wanted something on Saturday and there was nothing to be had. Strippers be thirsty, yo. On another level, it comes up a few times a year for me that somebody wants a drink and I never have anything to offer.

    Laptop Recommendations?

You can make fonts and stuff bigger, but there's no other way to get back a couple hundred missing vertical pixels. I think of 1366xwhatever as "shitty laptop resolution", as in, if I see it on a laptop I know it's a POS. A lot of software nowadays is just designed for 800 vertical pixels and...

    What's the best 32" 1080p LED TV?

It's my understanding that absolutely no one offers decent customer service on flat panel TVs. That's all anecdotal, but I hear stories from my students all the time. The HP Probook 4530 is in your price point and I recommend them mainly for the fact that they are inexpensive business products. H77 chipset

I suspect that a lot of EE CPUs are purchased because someone has a budget that says computers should cost $X and the only way they're going to get to $X is with a $1000 CPU. That's certainly the the case with the steel mill most of my students come from.

    The death of Best Buy

I'd have to make a 150 mile round trip to visit a Trader Joe's. Which is not impossible. I know where all of the Chicago-area locations are and I make it a point to stop if I'm near one. They really do have awesome stuff. I love their foil packaged spiced soybeans and I've never found anything...

    H77 chipset

Yes, but "budget" chipset will fill the needs of some ungodly percentage of desktop systems at this point. I suspect, though I have no evidence to support this assertion, that 90-something percent of extreme edition and k-series processors never get overclocked or paired with a dual GPU...

    The death of Best Buy

A LOT of hardware just doesn't support 5GHz. Most cheap notebooks, phones and tablets only support 2.4GHz. My Galaxy tablet sees both, but my Motorola Xoom and HTC Evo only do 2.4GHz. In a lot of cases there's just not a decent option except to try to carve out some kind of niche in 2.4GHz; it's...

    2TB drives under the duopoly

People are always more likely to report difficulty than success, or what fraction of drives are being reviewed, or how many drives the reviewer had experience with prior to review. I have a co-worker who has carried around the same POS Dell Inspiron for seven years. It's a POS. It was a POS...

question How do people buy music these days?

Apparently EMI withdrew its licensing for Grooveshark today, leaving it with no support from any of the major record labels. I'm not too interested in streaming music for myself, but I understand that it works perfectly well for a lot of people. I'd rather build a library of my own content...
