Thanks Mercutio, blatted the samba.conf and started again. Now I could get my wife's PC to see the SAMBA server, (from W2K) but I couldn't, and my wife couldn't when booting into W98SE. I'll start again...

OK peeps, I'm just a noob at this. I've got a Linux machine I want to use as a server (RH 7.3). Client machines are W2K SP2. Clients can ping server, server can ping clients Clients can access internet via ADSL on server I've mounted all the FAT32 disks I want to share and can see the contents...

    Barracuda 5 SATA review

.Nut Doesn't the IBM Deathstar ranges support TCQ? I am under he impression that it was introduced with teh 60GXP. And if it is true, then what is to stop current PATA drives from other manufacturers benefitting? And as TCQ is only optional in SATA (mandatory in SATA-II), isn't it a little...

    Barracuda 5 SATA review

Splash, I would like to be surprised on the upside by SATA but... Is there a whitepaper floating around that details the efficiency gains in the SATA command protocol? Seagate are obviously taking the correct move, but do you have any figures on likely performance boost due to the difference...

Anybody using a KVM switch? Feedback wanted

Thanks people, there is hope. Mercutio, I'm going to try VNC tonight. If I can relocate my server I'll be very happy. If not, Tea, you wouldn't have a price on a 2-port version of the one you are using would you?

Anybody using a KVM switch? Feedback wanted

I have been using a mechanical KVM switch for a while now (VGA, Serial mouse and DIN keyboard) and the thing that drives me batty with it is that at highish resolutions 1024 x 768 @ 75Hz or better, the VGA signal "ghosts" quite badly. 1280 x 1024 is unusable. So I'm in the market for a new KVM...

    Barracuda 5 SATA review

http://www.lostcircuits.com/advice/sata150/ Compares a Maxtor D740X to a 30GB engineering sample SATA 'Cuda V But I have a few concerns about the review. The 'cuda could have an 8MB buffer. The Seagate PR says 8MB, but the review states 2MB (it is after all an ES). Is there any software out...

    Western Digital - Warranty Change?

CougTek, Tannin, Mark - the Usual Suspects. Coug, you are right. A slightly slower drive won't turn a system into a snail. Mark is also right. The difference in performance between drives in most classes of drives is not distinguishable. The problem rears its head when substitute an average...

I've always suspected .NET of being another case of the Emporer's new clothes (a fancy name for passing and working with XML) but this adds a little weight http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=5334 It seems Microsoft don't want you to disclose .NET benchmarks. Do they have some performance...

New Cooler Master CP5-6J31C, anyone tried it?

If you have a look at DansData cooler comparison which has IMO a rather well researched, repeatable methodology, you will see that the Volcano 7, 8 & 9's score no better than the 6Cu. What people tend to forget is that while copper can absorb more heat than aluminium by volume, heat is carried...

    Greg's yearly shot at nix

:) Yeah, but apart from that glitch is was as smooth as any install I ever had. And in the past, the glitch would have toasted the W2K partition and all the data :o Disclaimer: I have been trying to get a workable Linux install off-and-on for a couple of years now, so when I buy major...

    Greg's yearly shot at nix

Re my earlier post about how smooth the RH install went. Well it wasn't quite that smooth. When it came time to partition the drive - the RH installer made some changes and away things went. What it did though was move some partition number around - and this temporarily hosed W2K. You see, I...

    Greg's yearly shot at nix

Santilli, I was playing with Mandrake 8.0/8.1 for a few months, but things kept crashing and updates were a pain. So I gave it a miss. A few hardware changes and I tried to boot Mandrake again only to find I've lost the 8.1 install disk. But I'd downloaded Lycoris (Redmond) a while back...

    Some observations on power supplies

He he Pradeep. Bought a cheap ATX case from the computer markets/fairs a few years back for my Celeron 300A. The p/s lasted 1 day before one of the capacitors blew itself to bits quite spectacularly... Not so cheap a buy after replacing the p/s.

Power supply weirdness Have had two power supplies go bad on me in as many weeks. One has seen almost three years service, the other two. The first was a Jao Jye (sp??) 250W AMD approved that came with my original Slot A Athlon. The other was a Leadman 400W. Both just died. A sharp crack...

    New system... reinstall OS?

Ghost, I recently tried to use Ghost to copy some partitions from one hard drive (34GXP) to another (60GXP - replaced by IBM after 2 months when the first died - talk about customer service :X). The drives were partitioned as 2GB (WIN98SE), 4 or 5GB (W2K- NTFS) and remainder as data (FAT32)...

    VIA KX133 Memory Interleaving

Clocker, memory interleave isn't that big a boost and depends upon the memory you have http://www.realworldtech.com/page.cfm?section=rwtlabs&AID=RWT110401204523 It shouldn't cause any stability problems though, so enable it.

Brother 1200/1400 series. I bought a Brother 1270N to replace a GDI shitbox :). The 1270N has a 10/100 NIC and parallel port. The 1270N has been superseded by the 1470N 1200 x 1200 (I find 600 x 600 more than adequate) works with Linux and HP drivers so it might even run under/with OS/2 :)...

    KT333, KT400 questions

Ahh no. That was the point of the questions. IIRC (and I'm seeking clarification here), revision CD of the KT333 does not support 166MHz FSB with a 1/5 PCI divider, revision CE does. There shouldn't be any rev CD version left, but I don't know that. I believe the official stance is that...

    KT266A tweaking

Yep. After the install, I did my usual BIOS tricks and patches and then started running some benches. Q3A scores were slower than the EPoX 8K7A. ScienceMark was a little faster (could be within the margin of error) and the Winstones were line ball - slight victory to the 8KHA+. MS Flight...

    KT266A tweaking

OK, after the Deathstar died, I had to re-install everything on a Maxtor D740X. Performance is now up to scratch. Maybe the install went bad because of a bad sector or two? Very strange. I would have thought that the whole thing would have went down the gurgler, not just slow down a little...

A curious thought just happened. Every time this thing has failed has been when I've moved it from one motherboard to another and when I've been running (or just after) Winbench 99's Disk bench's. If I wipe it, set it up again and leave it alone, it seems to work fine.
