    Sold on Dual CPUs?

Thinking of taking the plunge. Does anyone know of any problems with the Tiger MP? I have seen a good price on one and might make the jump if there aren't any quirks. Do the CPU's have to be the same stepping? Does the USB work on the Tiger MP (AMD760MP - not MPX)? Can 64-bit/33Mhz PCI slots...

    KT266A tweaking

Nope! (Hopefully) not that stupid. I was actually concerned by the statements before I bought the 8KHA+, and specifically bought it to test my theory. But I was expecting a little more performance out of the box. The article I write should go into things in a little more depth. :)

    KT266A tweaking

CougTek, measure it, I don't expect to see it. AMD760 is faster in Q3A, KT266A is faster in ScienceMark. I'm just running the Winstone bench's now - appears to be a dead heat so far. 4-bank interleave is set. ScienceMark reports the memory latency and I can see that the KT266A is better -...

    KT266A tweaking

Hi all. Is there any secret to tweaking the KT266A chipset? I have been playing around with an EPoX 8KHA+ and can't seem to get it to go much faster than my 8K7A+. In fact, in Q3A, the AMD760 is faster! I have done things like upgrade to the latest BIOS, set the most aggressive memory...

    Chipset for ClawHammer

No VIA for me (well at least not in the first pass). VIA does use HT and V-Link in it's chipset implementation. In traditional (VIA) chipsets, the north bridge (NB) connects to the south bridge (SB) via (ha ha) V-Link. Other makers use their own variant (SiS) or the PCI bus (AMD 760, ALi...

    Geforce Decision...Which One

What I consider to be a fairly insightful look into ATi and NVIDIA http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2002q2/ati-nvidia/index.x?pg=1 Notes (my analysis, not TR's): In the synthetic tests (3DMark), the ATi looks pretty impressive - mainly because 3DMark uses a lot of different texture maps...

    Anti Virus software

Better late than never I suppose but... I initially used NAV from a motherboard bundle - it went OK until I had to re-install it due to trashing the OS. The "trial" NAV thought I was trying to pull a swifty and wouldn't install. So I installed another copy from another motherboard bundle...

    Exciting technology

64-bit won't double the speed of your computer. In fact in a lot of cases, it might slow things down - as cas mentioned, if you start using a lot of 64-bit data constructs you can only fit half as many of them in cache - but then again, the cache of clawhammer is expected to double in size...

    Interesting hard drive testing

I'd be cautious about accepting such as statement Random chance says that the file level fragmentation could favour one particular drives file placement over another. IMHO, there are two few iterations of the test to be sure, but it could be verified. It's an interesting idea, but they...

    Interesting hard drive testing

I would have thought that this is a next to useless "benchmark" because there is no repeatability on where the files are placed physically on the hard drive. So one run might be with a less fragmented file system over another - and there is no way to know before hand or after, how this might...

Athlon Faster than P4 for FEA

I posted my take on these benchs on my front page but here goes: Now this (FEA benchmark) is both good and bad - good in the sense that this is yet another way to analyse performance - and in this particular setup, the Athlon MP and XP absolutely smacks the Intel offerings silly. Engineers...

Barton, SOI... Am I missing something?

Why change the spec for Barton? I believe that AthlonXP is at its frequency limit without a major relayout/process breakthrough. 130nm isn't going to give AMD the big speed gains that Intel achieved with the move to 130nm. In fact the big speed gains came becasue of the use of copper...

My first few hours with XP

Mercutio, one of the things I needed to do to get MoM to run under NT 4.0 was edit the "config.nt" file in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder, right at the bottom I needed to add (or uncomment) the "EMM = RAM" line. This added expanded memory support in NT 4.0 DOS boxes. I didn't have to do this...

James, why pay for RAM that your usage may never use? Like Tannin said about the price of RAM. I bought heaps last year when the prices were really low - 512MB in one machine, 768 in another and 640MB in the third - and I still have 256MB lying around. But I never use it. If you run W2K or...

Hi, thanks for the reply. When I tried to open an image to burn (File | Open), Nero only gave me the choice of it's image files. Selecting the ISO manually (all files) only placed a single ISO file in the left hand pane. Burnt this and ended up with a CD with one file.
