    Something Random

I don't bother with the iSCSI backend, all the disks are local. The simple description of the current problem is just flaky hardware with the simple solution being better and more hardware. Of course, if I wanted to implement systems and management capabilities that would prevent a flaky...

I thought I was getting good at my job. No significant loss of productivity company wide in the 3 years I've been in charge. No loss of data. No virus infections. And for the last 2+ years since I got most of it set up, no all-nighters. I have 3 VMWare servers, any 2 of which have the...

Indeed. I'm swapping out all our serial/parallel POS crap to at least USB, network if I can manage it. That is an interesting thing. My only use for serial would be to remotely control my 4x4 HDMI matrix switch (IR and serial, gotta love the monoprice folks).

    LSI buying Sandforce

The REVO drives I've been buying are LSI RAID cards tied to Sandforce controllers tied to memory. The pending Intel PCIe drives are Intel all the way. If LSI/Sandforce wants to compete in a growing field with shrinking margins, consolidation might be their only play.

Annoyance of the day - ATM charge for usage

Some of my lower volume clients just give me some Benjamins on my way out the door. Of course I declare it as income later on, but it does make the billing process easier.

Annoyance of the day - ATM charge for usage

I withdraw money at the teller only because the ATM won't give $100 bills (only in Vegas) and has a cap of $500. I use plastic for stuff I want to keep track of (food/gas/home improvements) and cash for stuff I don't want to keep track of (toys).

    Buying a projector

Yeah, I can propose whatever I want, but it has to be defensible. In my interest I'll be looking for as fool-proof a system as possible that offers quantifiably better performance than what he had for the lowest price. That price (of course) needs to be reasonably near the projected repair...

Just sent the SIM2 back to Florida for repairs, when the bulb blew it sprayed molten glass all over the internals and caused the fan controller to fail. RAID Superblock disappeared from one of my disks after crash. Fix?

How did your drives fail? If they can still be detected, you can try some RAID recovery programs and see what it can find. If the drives are completely inaccessible, time to throw in the towel. As every file is striped across every drive, you have lost some part of any file big enough to fill a...

    question Printer - Scanner

Indeed. Laser certainly sounds like the way to go. If you want color and duplexing, you can go to the Konica Minolta for $400+. There are Brother printers for less, but as I said, I haven't gone there.

    question Printer - Scanner

I have sworn off all inkjet printers for all purposes. Laser+duplex will be tricky in that price range. Do you need color? I'm assuming you have a pretty decent photo printer already. The base-level monochrome HP is $250. Under that, I don't have much experience.
