Not really any point in more RAM unless he plans on doing all those things at once. Current generation onboard video is fine for Aero. Upgrading to an SSD (like the 40GB Intel) will provide a measurable speed increase for anyone doing anything.

ESXi is really not fussy. I've run it on all kinds of stuff, including AMD X2 3800s, i7s, Celerons, you name it. I also haven't found an SATA or GbE controller it didn't like.

Run a VM server with SSDs and gobs of RAM. The CPU becomes the bottleneck pretty quickly.

Yup, 4k and 3D support make a lot of sense if I'm spending over a grand. If I wait until we are in the house and the low voltage conduit is in place, that gives me about 6 months. That should be enough time for some 1.4 stuff to enter the market.

All 9 fans, 6 HDDs, and 3 PSUs are mounted with some kind of vibration damping. Plus the entire rear panel is vibration isolated from the wall it's mounted on. The noise at the moment is still coming from the drives; I plan on suspending them with elastic on the next revision.

Notice? Probably not. But it is the fastest CPU for single-threaded apps, and therefore the best CPU for my application. If I need horsepower, I RDC to my machine in the office (the one in my sig).

I wanted power supplies with modular connectors to clean things up a bit. The lowest wattage PSU with modular cables from a company I trust was these.

Low power is one. The other is that I was looking for a really fast single core. These aren't hardcore workstations, just fast home machines. Firefox, Winamp, and Media Player Classic is pretty much all they do. Having 8 slower cores gets me nothing.

I suppose it depends on where you want to be on the price/performance curve as well. Considering you tend to hold onto your systems for a while, I'm guessing pretty far up? What would your budget look like? Do you have any components you would like to carry over?

An interesting note: Not only is the server "headless" in that it doesn't have a monitor, it doesn't even have a video card. Connecting the 3Ware card into the 16x PCIe slot disabled the onboard video, and I have unplugged the PCI card I was using to set it up.

If you are running Win7, I would go with the single big monitor. The win+left and win+right hotkeys make it more useful than a pair of smaller displays. I have multiple screens, but it doesn't benefit as much as having a big one.

So is this the cheapest Onkyo receiver that will take whatever I give it and convert it to HDMI? I would also love to have it output to two HDMI sources simultaneously (A splitter, not a matrix), but it looks like it would be cheaper to buy a separate splitter.
