Old i7 vs. New i5 (or Xeon E3)

I have four i7/9x0s sitting around. Two of them even have nice, expensive motherboards (1366 boards are STILL ridiculous) that have barely been used, to the tune of perhaps 50 power-on hours. Another board I have had a lot of power-on time before I retired it a few months ago. I have a nice...

I get that "Zelda" is a Nintendo reference, but I never had or got to play with a Nintendo until I got a Wii... that I gave away to a neighbor because I didn't use it for two years. But the same chick did this, which I like quite a lot more.

    question Which Tablets

The Kindle is dirt cheap compared to a Xoom, Transformer or Galaxy tablet. It also has the marketing muscle of the biggest internet retailer behind it (IIRC the Fire is the best selling item on Amazon... and it exists as a platform to sell more stuff from Amazon). People who are buying a Fire...

    question Which Tablets

I'm slightly annoyed by that. The Fire is definitely a sub-par Android experience. The hardware is fine but I spend a lot of time trying to explain to my friends and students how to work around the limitations of Amazon's app selection and the irregularities of its custom shell. I know everyone...

The problem with Microsoft stuff is that it ties in to EVERYTHING Microsoft. Your Live ID is tightly integrated into Windows 8 just like an itunes username is all but required to make some OSX craps work.

While the metric assload does have an official SI value that can be derived from fundamental physical constants, I prefer the more precise, institutionally-derived value of 1.10233 WDs per Assload.

There are metric assloads of people who would just be happy to figure out that they have a place to store things at all. I'm convinced that 2/3rds of all people who use computers every day don't even know how to make directories.

Google Drive 5GB of cloud space for free

Apparently the terms of use on Google Drive are slightly odious. Google gets the rights to use your uploaded files for its purposes, which can include publication. This does not seem to be a good move for a company whose slogan is "Don't be evil."

Unfortunately, that option isn't going to exist in a lot of OEM BIOSes... I can't see Lenovo doing that for T-series Thinkpads. The keyboards are as famous a component of their construction as the rollcage.
