    Cheap graphics cards, 2013

I've noticed that the guys at The Tech Report seem to really ding the current AMD chips for relatively high power consumption. Can somebody explain to me what the big deal is if your CPU (APU) is a 100W part versus 77W part?

    Cheap graphics cards, 2013

Hey Gang, I'm thinking about building a Linux machine, and I'd like to be able to hook it up to two monitors. I won't do any gaming on it, and would prefer low power/heat/noise. From what I can tell, Sandy/Ivy Bridge can do multiple monitor outputs, not sure about the AMD A-series chips. Has...

question I think I need a router - dumb question

My router is a DIR-655, and only has 4 (gigabit) ports. I'm contemplating a fifth computer in the house that would need a wired connection. What's the easiest way of going to >4 gigabit PCs? Getting a dedicated (non-wifi) gigabit router and putting some of the PCs on that? Connect on of my...

    Netflix and Windows 7

My family runs a HTPC upstairs, Windows 7 pro. We use it to watch Netflix. Yesterday it said we weren't authorized and showed us the logon page. It wouldn't let us log on. Wife called Netflix, who said that they don't support WMC (Windows 7). I know people have had all sorts of issues with WMC 7...

Anyone have experience with the 1TB platter Toshiba drives? IIRC, there was some deal with one of the mergers where some parts and/or technology was transfer ed to Toshiba to allow them to produce larger drives.

question ZFS and WD green drives?

I'm continuing to struggle to figure out how to store my music and home video collections on my main, Windows 7 machine. Up until now, I've sufficed with 2 TB drives, but over the next year, my video collection will likely go >2TB. I like storing it locally (I actually do go back to the old...

Using Crashplan too, similar amount of storage to what Handy is using. I like that I can tell it to restore a particular file from a particular date. I'm debating how many local backups I need if I also have Crashplan. Not sure I want to download >1 TB of data.

    External RAID enclosure recommendations

Figured it would be cheaper and maybe easier to get a SATA card and extra SATA hot swap backplane. http://www.cmstore-usa.com/haf-x-sata-back-plane-oem-package/ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115072

    External RAID enclosure recommendations

Right now I just need 4 TB, but I'd like the option to scale higher, hence the desire for a 4 drive unit. I have two 2 TB Hitachi 7k2000's and some WD Caviar Green drives. Was thinking of using the Hitachi drives.

    External RAID enclosure recommendations

Do you guys have experience with any decent external RAID enclosures? I'm looking for a 4+ drive enclosure that will let me access 4+ TB of data. eSATA is fine, but it would be nice if it included USB3/2 to facilitate easier recovery in case of failure. The cheapo $<200 units at Newegg...

    Disk Controllers with 3TB support

Still looking for a decent 4+ port PCIe (1x or 4x) SATA III card. Not particularly concerned with RAID. question Good SATA card?

Am I understanding PCIe correctly, that x4 implies that it can transfer up to 2 GB/s versus an x1 that would be stuck at 500 MB/s max? Another 4 port PCIe x4 device: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115078

    question Good SATA card?

    Drive drops?

Thanks all for your input. The drive problems happen with the same HD in both of my two hot swap bays. The other drive, same model, has no issues. Makes me think cabling is not the issue. Both go to a different SATA port, both on the Marvel controller. Same PS cable going to the hot swap...

3 years is just too long for WD

The move from 5 year to 3 year warranties didn't piss me off that much; rarely have I used hard drives for >3 years anyway. But I fear with a short warranty period, there will be little incentive to build reliable drives.
