    Bought my last Plextor

Recently I purchased a Plextor CD burner. It Was DOA. No amount of 'fixing' would bring this thing back to life. You could hear things rattling around inside. Eventually, a small electronic part fell out through one of the openings in the drive. I went to Plextors site to get an RMA. To get an...

    HD read/write question

Thanks for the replys! Freeborn: That doesn't make any sense at all. If you write to side one, track one and then switch to side two, track one, the heads never move. But what you are saying, on side one the heads would move into track 5 and then move the heads back to track one on side two...

    HD read/write question

How does a hard drive write to a hard drive with multiple disc ( or sides)? If you have a hard drive with a single disc but using both sides: does it fill up side 1, then go to side 2; does it alternate (ie: 1-2,1-2,1-2 etc); does it split the files similar to RAID 0; or some other method. What...

The version of Windows server 2003 is 'Standard Edition'. MS SQL Server 2000 will also be installed to process data. That's the reason for Server 2003. One thing I've learned in our plant, do it oversized as someone will want to add more task, programs, and data to it. The hard drives can be...

Merctio: Good write up and you are right on. The only thing that I will add is the $$$$$. We went with the Intel 865 chipset for one main reason. It could be had with built in video and was reasonably priced. Again, the money thing. That's another reason we are using 3Ware SATA controllers...

blakerwry: "And their is the magic of DMA and CPU offloading for the NIC." DMA is Direct Memory Addressing. Not direct NIC addressing. Using old and slow sub-systems on even a 100Gbit network slow things down. Maybe not with 5K files, but start moving 50M files and things get real slow, real...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

What's the data path from NIC to hard drive.? The packets need to be stripped of their "to-from" info to be wrote to the hard drive, right? The info from each packet must be 'assembled' into a file to be stored on the hard drive. This is done in memory(?). Doesn't this take processing power...

    Suggestions for new power supply

The effects of a computer power supply on the incoming line to your home or business probably cannot be measured, as far as PF is concerned. To see some effect you would need hundreds of PCs on at the same time. Your refrigerator probably has more effect on the PF than a home PC. Bozo :mrgrn:

My point was that you need a high performance setup even if it is only a file server. Using a P3 or celeron with a slow buss speed will bog down everything, even if you are on a GB network. This is not the first time I've run these kind of test. Fast CPUs, fast FSB speeds, and lots of memory...
