    Seagate Problem??

Over the last 6 months I have bought 20 Seagate X15s for use in some small file servers. In the last two weeks I've had two fail. Both were in the same server, in the same slot (drive #1). XP question

Finally got around to installing XP. So far so good. Does anyone know how to change the way IE keeps track of the pages you are at? It keeps all the windows in a tab on the task bar. You must expand the tab to see whats open. How can you get it to show individual tabs? Thanks, Bozo :D

Can anybody explain this transfer rate to me?

I was just wondering if one of the service packs might have broke and/or fixed the problem. I built two PCs with VIA chipsets and Intel CPUs and their IDE performace is terible. I went to VIAs site and checked in on their forums. Seems we are not alone. Bozo :D

    15,000 RPM

Over the past 4 months I have assembled 10 file servers using the Seagate X15. Each server has two, in RAID 1. I had one fail. This was the newest and least run server of the bunch. Maybe had 40-50 hours on it. It was still being setup so it was no big deal. Seagates RMA service is great. Now...

    Tweaking disk speed

If you note, SR uses Intel motherboards. In my limited experiance with VIA chipsets, they suck when compared to Intel. No matter how many 4-n-1 drivers and upgrades I've tried, VIA cannot equal the the performance of an Intel chipset, especially the IDE buss. (nor the stability) The Promise...

Upgrading Linux is such a pain.

Mercutio: I've tried those. Most times it trashes the install, or it makes a mess of the screen. "Fleet computer challenge"

One small suggestion. Unless you have a lot of help, don't order all 60 at once. Order the parts in small batches. But, let you vender know what you are doing so he can ship when you are ready. I just assembled 9 servers for our company and found getting 5 at once was more than enough. Bozo

    "Fleet computer challenge"

I know you said you don't want a 'all-n-one' motherboard, but have you considered an Intel board? You can't argue about the quality, and for $104 you get Lan, Video, and Audio. In next years budget, consider upgrading the video. The peace of mind of having a proven motherboard without...

    "Fleet computer challenge"

I was testing three new servers with a SOHO and 3C90x cards installed. I transfered two 650MB Drive Image files between the servers. It took three times longer on the SOHO cards as the 3C90x cards. Our vender told me that's because there is no 'cache' on the SOHO. (Therefore, cheap). Maybe...

    "Fleet computer challenge"

Short note on cheap NICs. Just installed some 3COM SOHO cards (~$20) and found they really slow down when transfering large files. In fact, they are three times slower than 3c90x cards. This could be rather agonizing when rebuilding from your server. Bozo :D

I already have SP-3 installed. The reason I ask: I was re-reading a MS 'fix' to enable UDMA66 in Win2k. It required making a new registry entry. When I checked for this entry after a clean install of Win2K and SP-3, the registry entry is not there. Even after installing all the Intel updates...
