    MP3 player rant

The standard argument I get (on another forum) is that I should relax and let itunes decide how best to manage my music collection, so I don't have to think about it any more, that it works eleventy times better on OSX than on Windows, and that any kind of application errors, database errors or...

    Online contacts or address book?

I really hate gmail's presentation and the "no email to yourself" rule, and I've yet to find a sync system between it and a local email or calendar client that I actually like.

I deal with contacts by remembering their phone number and email address. This works pretty well.

Four machines using Centos, two (essentially identical) Server 2008R2 machines. The Server2008 machines are my living room gaming system and my bedroom gaming system, and they're set up the way they are so I can play with Libraries, Indexing, Homegroups and Dfs. I'm using a mix of onboard...

    Something Random

I just spent the better part of a week upgrading my storage systems and the media sorting and indexing software associated with it. End result: four 12TB RAID6 arrays and two 6TB RAID5s. As I add music, the .id3 tags are broken down and multiple sets of symlinks are created so that I can drill...

    MP3 player rant

Apple people will quickly tell you anything you think is wrong with itunes is your own fault. The largest collection I've ever had to work with was about 450GB, at which point it became an absolute dog, performance-wise. I'd hate to see how it would mangle 1.5TB, but since most of my stuff is...

    Wifi router reccomendations?

I'm about 99% positive that everything that's been sold in the last five or so years does those things as part of the built-in firewall crap that's in pretty much all consumer-class routers. Being able to forward L2TP is an example of something that would be present in a business-class product...

    Wifi router reccomendations?

n gives you additional range and DOES offer better throughput than g, even if the 300Mbit connection is bullshit. 802.11 is shared bandwidth (and worse, overhead claims about half the protocol's specified speed), so while you won't get that 300Mbit, you might get a couple legitimate 50Mbit...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

The PS3 also has limited playback support (no six-channel .flacs, for example, and I suspect the majority of h.264 container formats are also problematic) or support for regular web-based content. PS3 users on Fark.com were jizzing their pants a couple months ago over Netflix streaming, putting...

    Small build

Actually, it's acceptable. It's not ideal, but you're well below what the CPU can tolerate. And for what it's worth, I have yet to encounter hardware that will properly hibernate or suspend and resume under Windows 100% of the time. My Thinkpads under Win7 don't resume maybe one time in six...

I have a 13U rack in my living room that's full of stuff that doesn't make any noise at all as long as the door is shut. Both my T60 and T61 are more audible than any desktop or rackmount machine I own, unless I've been playing games for a while and a video card is running its fan on high, I'm...

I've had a several system hangs. Curiously, they've all been while playing full-screen streaming video, both Flash and Silverlight. So I can play Dragon Age for hours at a time or recode DVDs with perfect stability, even when overclocking, but fucking Youtube can crash my PC. Weird.

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

I've only had to put up with a couple of them, and only once when they were both in the same place where I could subjectively compare the two. I thought the PS3 was louder, both for drive and for fan noise. No I don't know what model it was.

All the home consoles are objectionably loud to me, even the Wii. Based on my experience, I'll say PS3 > Xbox > Wii, but that's fairly subjective.
