Building a home NAS - feedback on build

That's an awfully consumer-friendly board to have a Supermicro label on it. Wow. Especially with HDMI.

They are slow. They are cheap. They're also very power efficient and sit on generally higher-quality motherboards (solid caps, cooler northbridges). AMD works really well for a low-cost all around desktop, but the things AMD brings to the table largely aren't things you need to have in a file...

I'm guessing you should see your read speeds drop by about 1/2 compared to the previous graph and your writes should stay about the same. ddrueding, I'd really love to see that softRAID.

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

I use IDE drives at this point for boot and loading OS (if necessary), to preserve my SATA ports for use in arrays. The ports are there and generally aren't being used for anything else, so why not?

    Supermicro RAID card

The important point for me is that I can be utterly unconcerned with where I'm getting my SATA ports. On my file servers, there are a mix of 3ware, Dell, Intel and JMicron controllers. Linux doesn't care what the underlying disk controller is. I don't have to depend on having another Dell or...

    Supermicro RAID card

As do I. And a substantial amount on tape. But it'd still be a tragedy to lose years of data because one card won't resync my array because it's .2 revisions off from the original hardware. Screw that. SoftRAID give me what I need.

    Supermicro RAID card

I love SATA ports, but if I had PCI-X slots on something I wouldn't be bothering with a board that can only handle eight of them. And yes, I'm still smarter than you for having arrays that I can actually recover in the event of a controller failure.

I just spent some time screwing around with it between my notebook and a Windows Server. I see what you mean about the flat listing and I don't see a fix for it. You might be able to do something with a batch file, though: xcopy /h/i/c/k/e/r/y/d will replicate a whole file structure and only...

    Windows 7 nonsense

In Vista, the Upgrade disc could be used for a clean install. You could install Vista as a custom install without a product key and then use the upgrade disc to "upgrade" to the Vista for which you actually had a product key. I actually expect this trick will work in 7 as well, since 7 can...

    nVidia exits the chipset business

There's nothing keeping nVidia from making AMD chipsets except the fact they don't want to. Plenty of judgment-impaired people would surely pair an nVidia-based card with an AMD CPU and an nVidia chipset.

Phone thread: What phones are you using, and with what plans?

AT&T's network is staggeringly awful where I live, and it's been pointed out to me that AT&T's coverage basically stops west of Chicago and doesn't pick up again until Houston and Denver. Essentially everyone I know who has an iPhone bought it to get a cheap iPod that they can also use as a...
