Every time I've purchased WD drives on purpose and of my own free will, they have failed catastrophically and in an unreasonably short period of time. I gave them a chance back in ~1995 - 6 and lost four out of four drives in a seven month period, all drive less than 14 months old. I gave them...

Windows pricing for OEM : unfair advantage

Coug, I'll trade you in a heartbeat. You get unabashed pluralistic culture, a functional economy and a working health care system, and our college kids can buy Windows for $10 if they go to a state-funded school. I think you win.

Windows pricing for OEM : unfair advantage

"Real" schools here get Office and Windows for $10 through a technology sharing agreement. That's one of the ways I deal with putting together cheap computers, since I put together a lot of machines for college kids.

Windows pricing for OEM : unfair advantage

My understanding is that MS charges tier-1 OEMs $20 - $30 for Vista right now. I can match the total machine price but any attempt on my part to earn a profit on hardware is going to kill the sale. So I don't even try. I round up to the nearest $10 and that's what I charge. Probably 85% of the...

SSDs - State of the Product?

mwave was one of my favorite internet resellers for several years before I started shopping at Newegg. They've always been a solid vendor. The fact that I still look at their sale Emails should say something, I hope. That really is a pretty good deal on that drive. I paid $350 - $380 apiece for...

I have some 800s and some 1200rpm SilenX fans. Yes, the smell goes away, but it's still a characteristic I associate with them. I also have an enormous stack of the 3-speed Antecs, since I bought sixty NSK-series cases that came with an extra fan.

IIRC there's a cleanup procedure for that. It comes from installing the drivers out of order from a Windows update that enables support for multichannel audio. You have to manually delete files and registry entries so things can install properly.

I re-use the hell out of high-end motherboards. If I'm buying a $150+ board, it's probably going to live in three different machines over three years, and in that time there will probably be at least one CPU change for some reason or other. Remember that it's comparatively easy for me to find...
