    Typhoon Ondoy and Hard Disks

I've had good luck with electronics on the lowest possible setting in an oven. I've rescued cell phones and music players that way. Of course, those things were dropped in fresh water, not salt.

I'm giving her the comic books and pixie stix (powered sugar in a straw), not the cornucopia of massage oils and condoms. That's my ex's idea of a joke. Truthfully I have no idea what's going to happen, but from asking the very small number of women in my life the overall consensus is that you...

Pasword to launch Windows Mail within profile

Since we're dealing with Vista, you could just set up Parental Controls to prevent his default account from running Windows mail while using the Secondary Login Service (right click, run as) to launch the program with a different set of credentials. Or you could set NTFS permissions such that...

    AT&T DSL blocks port 465?

My client has a configuration that works (through a demand-dial VPN), which is all he cares about. I've talked to AT&T several times now and gotten a different and contradictory reply each time as to the existence and nature of the blocked ports. I suspect it's a local issue only, but I'm not...

She's not very interested in flowers. I might get some anyway, just in the name of tradition, but probably not roses. I did send her some for her birthday last year. I knew where she was working, and Google maps was able to tell me there was a florist's shop just a couple of blocks away. The...

My friend Frodo will be here in 36 hours. I put her up at the Hampton Inn, just because, after visiting all the places that cost less than a Hampton Inn, I decided that I'd rather not give her the impression that the only people who live where I do are truckers and hookers. So I'm paying $600...

    Firewall for Windows x64

Yes. It's an additional layer of protection for your computers. It's possible that someone could find a scriptable remote exploit or worm for Linksys WRT-whatever that exposes your internal network, and at that point, you'll be wanting your internal software firewall again.

    Weird networking configuration question

No. That looks more like an L2TP implementation. Certainly more secure than PPTP, but I was just talking about PPTP, which requires pretty close to zero setup since it doesn't require a Certificate Authority and has both client and server already built into dd-wrt.

    Weird networking configuration question

If you can do dd-wrt, it has a built-in PPTP client and server. That's not the most secure thing in the world, but it's serviceable. The fact that dd-wrt does not directly support SSH is one of the things I don't particularly like about it.

    Speeding up Windows File Sharing

It's really not. You'd need a terminal server and a client that supports zmodem but I do know it's much faster than SMB for file sharing, if all you care about is transfer rate.

    AT&T DSL blocks port 465?

Tell you what: I'll give you RDP access to a client machine there and if you can make an SMTP connection using any combination of settings or encryption with any mail server other than smtp.yahoo.att.com from that client without resorting to stunnel or a VPN, I'll give you a nice, shiny quarter.

    PCIe x1 NiC's (gigabit)???

Biggest problem I have with Realtek NICs is that some of them just won't operate with some switches at speeds higher than 10Mbit, no matter what the link light is reporting. I've tested and verified this several times with 3Com and SMC switches against supposedly 100Mbit or 1000Mbit cards. I...

Wife's PC pauses during memory check

Does it hang after completing the RAM check or at some point during? If it's after, the next step in POST is to check the CPU, and if THAT is taking 10 minutes that would be highly indicative of a problem. Actually, no matter what, there's a hardware issue here. Nothing should normally take 10...

SSDs - State of the Product?

In the end, there's still the single huge issue of UI responsiveness, and in that department, Win7 is taking a back seat. There seems to be a LOT of FUD about using SSDs in the datacenter at this point. Mainstream support for more than 4GB RAM is nice, but short of machines that manage VMs or large databases I don't see a reason for it. If you're reasonably careful with hardware selection, a Hackintosh can be pretty easy to set up. Working from a Dell Mini 9 or MSI Wind U100 is very straightforward, as is going from from most Gigabyte i965 boards + a geforce 7300.

120mm Case fans with adjustable speed - recommendations?

I was just looking at this with my Network+ students, oddly enough. The least expensive, most practical 10GbE I'm aware of is 10GbaseSR, which is still fiber based. There *is* a 10GbaseT, which uses Cat6 but introduces enormous latency into your connections, and a 10GbaseCX, which has a range...

PXE relies on a small TCP/IP implementation to send out bootp requests and start the netboot process. In theory any interface that supports IP and has a DHCP/bootp server configured with the correct set of options would work, regardless of what's going on at layer 2. A quick google says some FC...

FC requires a whole support infrastructure to make it work. You need FC Switches and cabinets with a proper backplanes and even the cabling is expensive. Plus the controllers are mostly going to use some sort of funky interface like PCI-X or 64bit PCI, and that gets away from the consumer...
