I was thinking more for the "sometimes Crossfire, sometimes not" configuration. Though that certainly does answer that question.

    Four displays

I'm just checking here since I don't have two identical graphics cards sitting around at the moment, but if I stick, say, two ATI 4770s or two nVidia 9500s in the same PC, I can run those as four independent displays without mucking about with Crossfire/SLI, right?

    The Great Gigabit Ethernet Shootout

I'm mildly fascinated by these results, but it does very little to convince me that the Realtek Ethernet chipsets are anything other than garbage hardware, given the real-world difficulties I have had with them.

    nVidia exits the chipset business

There's nothing keeping nVidia from making AMD chipsets except the fact they don't want to. Plenty of judgment-impaired people would surely pair an nVidia-based card with an AMD CPU and an nVidia chipset.

    1TB Drives?

I've got four 1TB Hitachi drives sitting in an Acer Windows Home Server at a customer site. They were the cheapest 1TB drives I could get. They get a little bit warm, but that might be from the design of the enclosure.

Phone thread: What phones are you using, and with what plans?

AT&T's network is staggeringly awful where I live, and it's been pointed out to me that AT&T's coverage basically stops west of Chicago and doesn't pick up again until Houston and Denver. Essentially everyone I know who has an iPhone bought it to get a cheap iPod that they can also use as a...

Spyware is rough. One more good tool is always better than no good tools. I had the unmitigated joy of dealing with something called "Windows Police Pro" today that prevents the execution of any other program on the system after it is loaded and appeared to auto-load with Windows Explorer...

    Virtualization project

Well, let's go down the list: Management: * VMware at the moment has much better management in complex environments, and its management scales well to deal with more guest images than you're likely to have in your environment. * Microsoft really only has simple offering at the moment, but in...

    Virtualization project

As I understand the situation there are a couple of things going on: One is that they're looking for something that's going to have enterprise support if need be. ESXi is free and moves them up to a full VMware installation with all the attendant management tools if that is needed. Microsoft's...

Phone thread: What phones are you using, and with what plans?

Yeah. My two main iPhone-using customers are pestering me about getting those things. Those things range outside your house, though. You're effectively donating your internet bandwidth to any AT&T customers who happen to be nearby. That's more than a little galling to me, and I say that as a...

    HP m8200n SPDIF problem

First thing is: HP has switched from using Asus boards to using ECS? Ouch. You want the video card to be the full-time sound output? I don't think that setup will work with the nVidia card. My understanding is that nVidia does not fully support sound output via HDMI, at least with its older...

    Firewall for Windows x64

Yes. It's an additional layer of protection for your computers. It's possible that someone could find a scriptable remote exploit or worm for Linksys WRT-whatever that exposes your internal network, and at that point, you'll be wanting your internal software firewall again.

    Weird networking configuration question

No. That looks more like an L2TP implementation. Certainly more secure than PPTP, but I was just talking about PPTP, which requires pretty close to zero setup since it doesn't require a Certificate Authority and has both client and server already built into dd-wrt.

    Weird networking configuration question

If you can do dd-wrt, it has a built-in PPTP client and server. That's not the most secure thing in the world, but it's serviceable. The fact that dd-wrt does not directly support SSH is one of the things I don't particularly like about it.

    Speeding up Windows File Sharing

    PCIe x1 NiC's (gigabit)???

Biggest problem I have with Realtek NICs is that some of them just won't operate with some switches at speeds higher than 10Mbit, no matter what the link light is reporting. I've tested and verified this several times with 3Com and SMC switches against supposedly 100Mbit or 1000Mbit cards. I...

Wife's PC pauses during memory check

Does it hang after completing the RAM check or at some point during? If it's after, the next step in POST is to check the CPU, and if THAT is taking 10 minutes that would be highly indicative of a problem. Actually, no matter what, there's a hardware issue here. Nothing should normally take 10...
