Some Nocona 64bit lovin, first impressions.

Yikes. For the record, 64-bit Windows isn't that exciting. Or different. Or appreciably faster.

Why do wireless to wired bridges cost so much?

I've got three or four of 'em sitting around. If only they had a CF slot or something. They'd be fantastic little mail/web servers. It still annoys me that one of the most complex devices Linksys makes costs so little when compared to vastly simpler hardware.

Why do wireless to wired bridges cost so much?

    I can buy a WRT54G for maybe $75. That's a wired switch + NAT device plus infrastructure-mode AP that runs at 54Mbit. I can buy a WET11 for around $90. That's a single-port ethernet to infrastructure-mode AP that runs at 11Mbit. I can buy a WGA54G for around $130. That's a single-port ethenet...

[NEWS] - Nvidia goes for Nforce 4

I've heard staticky sound, but never on my personal machine nforce system. One thing I have noticed is that nforce2 boards seem to be picky about RAM in ways that Via-based systems just aren't, e.g., this pair of DIMMs won't work in slots one and three, but the machine works fine if they're in...

Getting Hard Drives out of Computers...

My solution for that, in my bedroom, was to do do XGA-over-cat5 (the baluns are around $40 for a set) + a USB hub on a long cable. My "bedroom PC" is on the far side of a wall, in another room, from where I sleep. I can't hear it at all.

Getting Hard Drives out of Computers...

The Window-based guys generally run Windows CE and have ~300MHz CPUs with 64 - 512MB RAM. If you can compile your program for that, they can do things besides be a terminal. Besides, why do anything on a client if you've got a monster server 50 feet away that's using .04% of its CPU(s)?

My Cat is getting so smart, it's scary...

I had a cat who would play piano with me. She'd pick two keys and rock back and forth on them while I practiced. When I had a regular, corded phone, my cat Will would knock the receiver off the base (right by my head) to wake me up. Usually at about 5:00AM, when he thought I should get up and...

    Justified?

I'd just like to point out that: 1.) LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) is going to hit the market in a very big way in the near future. Intel is throwing a lot of R&D into it, and that can only be a good thing for ALL the different screens on the market. 2.) Unlike a projection TV, I can watch...

    Wireless SuperG PCI NICs

HomePNA and Homeplug are expensive and slow. 1 - 10Mbit is just not very appealing. ($150 for a Homeplug bridge, plus $80 per NIC, IIRC). And you don't always have a phone jack where you need one. There are only three in my house. And neither are well-supported outside Windows. And ethenet...

Component splits the information into three entirely seperate cables, one each for Red, Green and Blue. Contrary to popular belief, digital is...

There's a linear relationship between TV size and room size. My previous 32" display was a bit too small for my living room. I had to move everything around to make my DLP set anything other than a hulking monolith, though. In a lot of small spaces (like my apartment, when I lived in one), 27"...
