Good Idea/Bad Idea: 7-in-1 USB Media Drive

Everything related to your computer has to support it for it to work. BIOS, OS and the device itself. The biggest problem at the moment is lack of BIOS support - my 5.5-year-old IBM 540 can boot off a thumb drive, but I don't have a single Athlon 64 machine that can do it. In short, it...

Backups? SATA or ide? or Firewire?

Hard drives in trays are easily the fastest and possibly cheapest way to go. The man hours needed for optical media would probably be too high and the density just isn't there.

    Budget graphics cards

The cost of a Matrox card, unless you can find G400 system pulls or something (Axion Technologies is selling G450s for $35, if anyone cares BTW), is simply to much to bear for a typical PC. Yes, there's a readily identifiable quality difference between the Matrox cards and, say, the nvidia crap...

The amplified range of my 802.11 equipment is pretty good, but not quite as good as I'd expected. I don't have any trouble getting my laptop to associate with my AP 4 blocks from my house. 2000 feet of wireless goodness. Wish I left the house more often.

Building my GF a new system: critique please

Why not an NEC DVD-R? One of the ones that's flashable to dual layer, maybe? The Gigabyte board you've proposed is a really nice little guy. I've used it several times and I like it a lot. Does it fit in an Aria, though? I know there's a fairly short list of acceptable boards...

KT400 4 eva' :D OK, now that that's out of my system - my solution to the active cooling on new Gigabyte boards is to just take the damn fan off. It'll die in six months anyway, at which point the fan basically becomes an insulator, so the way I figure it, I'm probably doing work that someone...

    1. Yes, a network card and router is the most effective way to share the connection. Windows ICS is kinda lame. 2. Hardware firewalls are probably a better idea than software. Home Theater 'kit' Recommendations, About $1,000

You'll only thank yourself for buying a real receiver and real speakers. $1000 is plenty of money for that. 1. DON'T SKIMP ON YOUR CENTER CHANNEL. Spend extra to get a nice center. 2. Buy timbre-matched speakers (all from the same manufacturer, at least) - I like Yamaha for cheapies, and I...

News: Ronald Reagan dead at 93

I'll say something nice: He was funny when he wanted to be. However, Reagan, a man of no great intellect, also had a habit of wandering "off message" and into realms that really made him look, let's face it, bad. I suspect this is at least part of the reason GWB's handlers don't ever let him...

One key difference between Matrox cards and everyone else is that Matrox tries really hard to have hardware acceleration for EVERYTHING.
