    Building a Storage Server Thread

I do have another storage server idea, one that might be appealing to budget-conscious types. $150 P3 500, a lease-return machine, or maybe that Celeron 300A you've been ignoring for the last two years. Add a $30 Promise Fasttrack, four $60 80GB drives and a linux install, and for all of $240...

    Knoppix unavailable?

I was just looking at some things related to the storage server article and noticed that knoppix.org isn't distributing knoppix at the moment over concerns about European software patents. Which is a shame, 'cause I really wanted to discuss its use, per discussions in our storage server thread...

    Building a Storage Server Thread

Building a Storage Server In this day and age, an 80GB hard disk is more than most computer users can fill, but at the same time, there are some in the world for whom even 800GB is not enough. 800GB? That’s around 133 DVDs. It’s 10,000 hours of reasonably high-quality MP3 music, or 1100...

[NEWS] - Now you can SuSe for free

As I understand things, official ATI open-source drivers for the Radeon have been added to xfree in the last couple of weeks. So, not yet, but if you're willing to wait through a refresh from your distro of choice (or compile xfree, which is not the easiest thing to do), it'll be here soon. No...

I'd suggest reading on the links in Blake's thread about making a router in the Computers forum. I know not everyone has the time to set up a router/firewall but that really is the best way to go.

P4 EE and RAID 10 on a laptop

For $7000, I think I'd get a kick-ass backend system and 802.11 to Terminal Services or something. I can't think of any reason to carry around something like that.

    Outsourcing rejection

Some of you guys know this and some of you don't, but I tried for years and years (five of them, in fact) to get a professional, corporate-type job. If you can imagine going to interview after interview, taking call after call from recruiters for temp work, and not getting anything - during the...

Digital cameras?? Best company track record?

Hi HeddaLora. Welcome to our little group. The C200 is a 1MP point-and-shoot job. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done, especially if the job is taking photos that'll wind up on line. I've played with them, but the one thing I thought as I did was, "shouldn't this thing be a little cheaper?"...

Yup, that's her. Salon is a great site. I don't visit as often as I should, partly because there are pretty much always stories related to my, uh, personal trauma. The first time I read this, it was heartbreaking in a way. I've probably been through those interviews. I certainly didn't get a...

I know the first Might and Magic came out in 1986 or 87, for the AppleII and PC, at least. It was one of a number of similar games (Bard's Tale, Dragon Wars) that sought to capture a pen-and-paper feel. The designer (John van Canegehm, or something like that) undoubtedly played Dungeons and...
