    How do people meet people?

Mine is basically the appliance for processing my satellite's video. Snapstream supports tuning my satellite receiver via serial cable, so I can set a schedule of recordings and just walk away. It also directly supports the ATI remote, and it can multicast recordings to other PCs in my house. So...

    How do people meet people?

Hardware upgrades, followed by ranting at snapstream tech support people (snapstream RECORDS just fine but I get hard locks when I try to play back anything through the snapstream interface. It REALLY pissed me off when someone told me to buy an nvidia card to fix it), followed by working on...

Walmart to create own brand of notebooks?

I can actually tell when I'm near a Walmart by the increase in Nascar window decals. If more than three cars that I can see have 'em, I'm within a quarter mile of a Walmart. I swear to Buddha that I saw a guy simultaneously prove 40 "You Know You're A Redneck If..." axioms in a Walmart parking...

Teaching a *consumer* video editing class

I ended up using Sony's Screenblast MovieStudio. It's a $100 program, but frankly I'm stunned by what they packed in for the money. Some other cool things: My classroom for this had super-nice PCs, but no Firewire. I paid $8 apiece for Lucent-based 3-port jobs, and they came in a retail kit...

    Image management software

I liked Photoshop Album's interface, but given the sorting task before me, it's woefully inefficient for my tagging and sorting needs. It worked great for my library of digital camera pictures, but after I spent a couple hours setting up the categories I wanted for my, uhm, "other collection", I...

Walmart to create own brand of notebooks?

Technically, the slave laborers are actually contractors hired by temporary agencies that deal exclusively with Walmart. Sort of like Microsoft's relationship with Volt, only even more slimey and underhanded. I can't stand Walmart. I've been in their stockrooms. They're disgusting, and even...

    How do people meet people?

Since this thread is up near the top of the list, I'd just like to say that I'll only be working 52 hours this week, and that I've already worked them all. This is the least I've worked since February of 2002.

I usually tar and bzip or gzip. Winzip I don't actively resent using but I'm standing by my evaluation of WinRAR. If anyone needs to rehash this, there was another thread here about WinRAR sucking. You can go read that.

So I just tried the \i386 xfer with my Celeron 433 Laptop (also 66MHz bus, 256MB RAM, 10GB crappy laptop hard disk), over 802.11A. Took ~3 minutes 45 seconds. Over 802.11A. On a 4000rpm hard disk. In a laptop that wasn't plugged in.

I see no reason to move away from the P3 config I mentioned earlier, in part because I'm unsure of the wisdom in installing a CPU that can't be replaced without replacing the whole board.. Plus I'm a little more comfortable with SuperMicro's engineering and, hey, 64bit PCI. That 600MHz EPIA...

I disagree that advanced expansion isn't worth the expense. If we're talking about Gbit networking, 32/33 PCI is actually a bottleneck. If we're talking about enterprise-class disk controllers, PCI is actually a bottleneck. Especially if it's sharing a bus with a Gbit NIC. I also disagree that...

It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a media server to also be a game server. Most popular games seem to have Linux servers, so I'm not worried about that aspect of things, but would a 1.13GHz P3 suffice for LAN play of Counterstrike or Unreal or whatever kids are playing these days?

OTOH, the extra $1000 you make as the VAR who delivers a transparent domain-model authentication and file server that leads to saving your customer $10,000 in CALs and license fees is more than worth the hours you put in learning how to do it.
