    Writing something

I kind of hit a wall where nothing I thought of sounded interesting enough to write. I'll give it some thought and see if I can think of more to write.

    What's up with this?

Yup. I downloaded the manual and that's basically what it said. I'm just having a hard time with "six phase power" being worth $65 more than the "1 model down" version of the same board.

Uh oh.... dead USB or motherboard?

From your description it sounds like Mr. Thumb Drive did something very, very bad. You need to strip things down to bare. Pull all your cards. Disable everything. Use a PCI video card if you have one. PS/2 keyboard. If it doesn't boot like that, well, you probably wanted to upgrade anyway.

    What's up with this?

Well, 1. Newegg is no longer listing GA-7VAanything, and 2.) there are a number of new Gigabyte nforce2 boards, some at up to $200. That in itself is a little odd (and annoying, since I just bought a second asus one), but Looking at the product link, can anyone tell me what the weirdo card...

    Enlight Cases Still Good?

Yup. Sounds like you're getting better PSUs than I am, though. I'm really fond of Compucase. I'm a believer in buying high quality at reasonable price, and Compucase mangages that fairly well, being both higher-quality and lower priced than AOpen and Enlight.

    Enlight Cases Still Good?

They do have the cut-outs, just not the connectors. The 6919 actually has cutouts for sound and firewire, too. I don't use them. I'm refusing to touch front-mounted anything until someone standardizes the cabling.

Nope. Next time you're connected to a *nix box by a terminal with proper support, type "sz filename" and see what I'm talking about.

    Enlight Cases Still Good?

I like the Compucase 6919 ($72) and its little brother the 6A19 ($60). Both appear to be clones (?) of the Antec design, just like Coug's Chemming.

Realtek ALC650 Onboard 6-Chennel vs. SBLive!

Using the RealTek as a baseline, yes, everything that's out there sounds better. Sound tends to "skip" when your CPU is under high load, something that doesn't seem to happen with PCI based sound cards or soundstorm. When does your average PC user, even your average gamer, max out their CPU on a...

That's actually 2x 14.4, which isn't quite the same thing as 28.8 (a bit like having two 1GHz CPUs in SMP isn't 2GHz). Actually, my mozilla image permissions are such that I don't load images from outside the site I'm currently viewing. That gets rid of the overwhelming majority of advertising...

Realtek ALC650 Onboard 6-Chennel vs. SBLive!

I'd probably use ACL650 unless I had a compelling reason to do otherwise. Only a gamer or a multimedia hobbyist would likely notice the difference. For everyday sound, the Live has a little bit better SNR, but without expensive speakers, you're not going to notice that, either. In short, the...

Shuttle AK38N : 62.61$ shipped here, worth it?

I used an AK39N not too long ago. Like the AK32A, I don't have any particularly bad things to say about it. It was cheap and it worked the way I wanted. Which I guess is praise enough. Since the AK32 and the AK39 are like that, I'll bet the AK38 is, too.

    Writing something

mubs has exhorted me to write something. I had some free time this weekend and nothing in particular better to do, so I sat and tried to do exactly that. blake, zmdoem works over any shell connection. It's faster whether I'm connected to something via serial line or GBoC. Three things make my apartment REALLY nice: 1.) It's cheap. Really cheap. Under $400/month with paid utilities. 2.) I hate moving my belongings, and my current apartment is...

Yay! A now-uncommon visit from the hairy aussie! IIRC, the Via P4 chipset is a real POS. You know something is wrong when every chipset SiS makes compares favorably. IPv6

Sure it is. If your ISP is anything like most businesses, they probably don't have the time or an employee to spare to make sure that network services you're interested in providing on its network won't cause a problem for its other users.
