Are there SIMM stackers for 168-pin SDRAM?

You're off by a little bit, blakerwry. I paid about $1350 for a 17" Mag in late 1993. I can probably even dig up the Computer Shopper I ordered it out of. The second 17" I bought, in the fall of 1995, was only $585 + shipping, but I paid wholesale price from the importer for it.

I think it'd be cool. Actually, I know of a couple places along those lines already - one that's run by adult-site webmasters and one that's for fan-types. The adult-site guys have a social club, not unlike our B&G. The fans site (it's a subsite of bomis.com, but I won't link it) has almost...

    Radeon AIW8500DV & MPEG-2 Files

The machine I'm sitting in front of right now has a AIW7500 in it, running 2000, and there don't appear to be any MPEG2 codecs on the machine in device manager, despite the fact that I also have PowerDVD4 installed. Just capped 20 minutes of MPEG2, 720x480, 30fps, 5Mbps, while playing a game of...

    Abit KT7-RAID Socket A Motherboard

If it makes you feel any better, blakerwry, I have a couple of boards (one Abit KT7A and one FIC AZ11E) that had leaky caps as well. A large percentage of Abit boards were affected by that particular problem because, while a great many OEMs (Asus, Tyan, Abit... the list is very, very long) used...

I'm peeved, why does this still happen.

I looked for a full-time, permanent job for years before I started doing what I do now. I can honestly say that I was overqualified for about 85% of everything I did as a contractor, and I can honestly say that I know that my qualifications got me turned down more than they got me interviews or...

I'm peeved, why does this still happen.

I know, after training several people who have wanted to work as salesmen or techs at Best Buy, that retail stores in general don't have any real desire to hire truly competant employees. Two reasons: 1.) A competant employee might desire a higher wage or leave his job for more challenging work...

Help me with a vomit box upgrade

The "expertise" in taking a Pavilion apart is hard won. I spent 2.5 hours trying different things and furtively searching HP's site while working on one before I realized that, despite good documentation for some of their cases, some others have absolutely none.

Sadly, I know this one. The 69xx Pavilions are the MicroATX P3s with Asus boards, aren't they? You obviously got one side of the case apart without problem. The problem is the other side, of course. Three choices, depending on the case: There may be a button in a CD tray (it's on the lip...

    surge protectors: The neglected topic

I've found that most surge protectors are less than ideal for computer equipment because of either poor positioning of the plugs (ever have a wall-wart take up three outlets on a surge protector?), having cords that are simply too short or because the on/off switch is too easy to trip. Honestly, upgrading "server" CPUs doesn't happen very often. Still, it's amazing how much life...

WinXP Mirrored Volume Increased Read Speeds?

Whoops. XP DOES NOT, repeat DOES NOT support mirroring. Software RAID1 and RAID5 are the province of server editions of NT. XP, like NT4W and 2000Pro, can only do striping. You may now beat me with my MCSE ID card.

WinXP Mirrored Volume Increased Read Speeds?

There wasn't in NT or 2000. I'd venture a guess and say you're not going to get it in XP, either. If you want "performance RAID1", you could do a lot worse than a 3ware card.
