    Help chosing a motherboard

Given the nature of the application, I'd give some consideration to a genuine Intel board rather than some other OEM. The D845GEBV2 does most of what you want, but it has audio and LAN on-board (and 6 PCI slots - are you going to install any DSP 'boards for accelerating your editing?). It also...

    Cold weather and laptops

I'd actually worry more about your battery than anything else. Cold will kill that battery very, very quickly. My rule of thumb is to not leave anything that has a battery in a car that you would wouldn't leave a pet in. Thinking of my laptop and cell phone that way makes it a bit easier to...

most unsecure O/S? yup, it's possibly Linux...

Tannin is correct in saying that Microsoft upped the criteria for issuing a security notification. Microsoft also has instituted some other interesting practices, like not notifying the public of severe bugs/security problems until after a patch has been made, and not acknowledging that some...

No problem. I was just amazed when one of my linux boxes started making noise out its speakers after I put in a GA7VRXP board (which has the same chip as the SB128) and install RedHat 7.2.

    Do I need more RAM?

Have you set you pagefile to a single size yet? Do that, and see if it's just XP being lame and randomly increasing/decreasing your swap file. In general, especially with a laptop, where hitting the hard drive is really painful, the answer to your question is "yes, you need more RAM." ;)

    "Fleet computer challenge"

I *hate* those Palo Alto cases. They're thick, cheap plastic, and IMO the interior arrangement of components leaves something to be desired, as does the "it'll never fit the same way again" side panel. The case I use is steel, through and through. It is exceptionally quiet, and access is by two...

    Willow me this . . .

... and because I'm the kind of guy that voted for Al Gore in a state so republican that my vote is irrelevant, I'd like to point out that 1.) that statement was taken vastly out of context, 2.) That Al Gore did, in fact, sponsor legislation creating DARPAnet (this is essentially the correct...

JoJo - for Linux, try an SB128. They're autodetected and basically self-configuring in Linux (er, Red Hat, anyway). The Live has Linux drivers, but they don't do everything the Windows versions do. Anyway, SB128s are cheap and practical. The Santa Cruz does have Linux support, also. I've...

The enterprise version does offer some useful features. The basic (systemworks or Personal Edition) version doesn't want to save to network drives. The Speeze wound up being best of the bunch. It doesn't cool quite as well as the Volcano 97, but it isn't quite as loud with the 7 at the "low" setting, and it cost about a third of what the 7 did as well. Good deal for a budget fan if it turns out to be a reliable unit.
