Well, I *am* supposed to be meeting Fushigi tomorrow morning. I'll probably call him Fushigi. I don't know what he'll call me. I pretty much figure we'll have some kind of get together someday, anyway. Hopefully my own neurosis won't keep me from attending, but when you think about it, Clocker...

Looking for text editor that can do math

Emacs. Emacs is a bootloader away from being an operating system, but pointy-he4aded emacs flunkies have made modules to do EVERYTHING, including math. A solution that does not involve a change of religion is to spend a few quality hours with a regexp tutorial and any of the fine tools out...

One thing that I must say about receiving kit from Clocker: The weight of the packing tape around it always exceeds the weight of the contents of the box. No worries about shipping damage when you buy from Kev! I actually had to go get a bigger knife to open my present... Very Big :D, obviously.

    InCD CPU hog?

.. and that's another limitation of CD-RW, too. Discs become unwritable after a few thousand writes (early discs were 100s, new ones are supposed to be some four-digit number of writes). Yes, there are IDE CF readers, just as there are IDE PCMCIA readers. They're both highly uncommon. What I...

    InCD CPU hog?

I wouldn't give up one of my precious IDE channels for some asstastic floppy-like MO drive. Now, maybe if extra ATAPI-compatible channels were put onto motherboards, it'd be feasible, but not if I have the choice between 120GB of fixed storage and a 200MB removable. jtr, one of the big...

From one of the "listmania" lists that includes the Hasselhoff CD: "Apparently, in Germany Hasselhoff is the most popular hobby next to oppressing minorities. You don't want to hang with that crowd." I was drinking milk, and it did in fact make the short, bubbly trip from my nose to my keyboard.

    InCD CPU hog?

    1. Disc incompatibility. CD-RWs don't work in an awfully high percentage of readers in the world. 2. Disc incompatibility. To read a data CD-RW in a PC, you have to have some kind of UDF reader installed. Annoyingly, the two most common readers (Ahead's and Roxio's) are both over 1.44MB. Combine...

    InCD CPU hog?

I have similar issues with InCD on some of the older machines (K6-2/450s, P3/450 and 500 machines) I maintain. I strongly discourage use of CDRW discs, though, so my solution was to remove InCD from Startup.

The new lab is supposed to go live before the new year. After that, the mandate is for most of the teaching to take place in XP. I rent my apartment and I cut up the drywall. I got brave and re-did the phone jacks, since they used the huge, antiquated block connectors, and put in really nice 6-port wall jacks with 2 phone and four ethernet connections. I managed to hide the jacks in my wiring closet just above a shelf...

IBM waves goodbye to OS/2 operating system

Got a source for that, cas? I'd really like to know more about the early history of Windows than I do. My understanding is that Microsoft's first adventure in GUI software was Excel for the Mac (PARC blah blah), and that the success of that product led to a more general interest in a GUI for...

Or Slashdot. Kind of a sad day. At this point it'll be interesting to see how computing history describes OS/2. Dell 2000FP 20" LCD Monitor for $759 + tax

Consumers are stuck with the idea that bigger numbers = better product. Stereo amplifiers are a great example of this (Do the 500 watts an Aiwa or Sherwood amp put out sound better than the 250 watts from an Onkyo or Yamaha? I think not), so are computer speakers e.g. the $6 3-piece set that...

The best add-on IDE cards are almost certainly made by 3ware. There are a couple of problems with many of the add-in IDE boards on the market. One is that ATAPI support is iffy at best. The second that the low-end cards all have a pretty shoddy reputation (ask Santilli or, IIRC, CougTek). If...

I don't think there will be any official price cuts before Q1 03, but you might get lucky with a retailer clearing out inventory in the after-xmas/pre-New Year time period. There probably won't be anything worthwhile until Clawhammer comes out, at least on the AMD side.
