SSDs - State of the Product?

Take them off the controller, just use the onboard softRAID.

    Online backup

The fiber line I installed for them did more than backup. They shared the internet connection, and a file server, and use it for LAN games. I think they even got a slingbox and are splitting a cable subscription. My fiber is in a pressurized armored sleeve in a hardened conduit buried 4 feet...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

If you own a 1080P display and a BluRay drive, you must watch the BBC "Planet Earth" series. It is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on screen.

    Online backup

Nothing was installed, and the wire never crossed public property. By the time the natural disaster happens, I would hope you already have your information at your backup site. Recovery is as easy as walking over with a USB drive.

    Online backup

Routers (and therefore internet connections) are slow. Instead of sending data to your friend via the internet, run a point-to-point fiber-optic cable to their house and use that for data transfer. I helped a couple friends do this. They lived on the same block but about 6 houses away. I just...

That would require single-mode fiber. Does your friend own a trencher? ;)

    Online backup

Forget routers, I've run fiber along the back fence from one house to another on the same block. Here I have gigabit fiber buried for a mile to my backup location

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'd believe it. They are chips soldered to a board, mounted in a metal chassis. The only vulnerable part is the SATA/power connectors.

I share Howell's concern on restore. I'd make sure that they can send you a DVD/HDD with all your data for a fee.

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

Just the other day someone wanted me to retrieve data from a super old memory card. It looked like an SD card, but twice as wide/long and half as thick. I think it was 32MB. None of my card readers even have a slot the right size.

There seems to be confusion as to what they want. Either we can go back to how it was and let a few people die, or we can all fly naked, manacled to our seats, under guard.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Vista and 7 have a bunch of RAID card drivers already integrated. Can't speak to that exact one, but many work without disks. Even if they aren't supported automatically, you now have the option of putting the drivers on a USB thumbdrive or CD. Floppy not required.

Does that laptop have an SSD in it? If not, don't worry about the 100Mbps. That won't be the bottleneck, and is still MUCH faster than wireless.

That will absolutely work, but is more complex than connecting both to the router.

    Online contacts or address book?

  33. ddrueding

    Network

The problem is that the computers don't know which way to send information. My proposed solution would be to connect both machines to the router via cables when you want to transfer files. It should be nearly as fast, without the downsides.

Just to make sure I understand what is going on. 1. You have two computers (A and B). 2. You have one internet connection, and it goes through a router (C). 3. Computer A connects to Router C via wireless. 4. Computer B connects to Router C via network wire. 5. When you also connect a network...

    Weird networking configuration question

You are probably right. I have climate controlled boxes going in next week, and on-line UPS systems on the way. I'll swap out the linksys with another and see what happens. I might even crack the case and look into active cooling.

    Weird networking configuration question

This has been working almost flawlessly for a couple months. Unfortunately, that "almost" involves having to reboot the hardware on the remote end every week or so. At 5:15AM. 50 miles away. SSDs - State of the Product?

Price is really good. I don't see them coming down much more. Larger sizes will approach that price, but a bit more than $100 is low enough to clear most peoples restrictions. I have a stack of those on my desk right now, and have used a dozen in the last week. A pair in RAID-0 (60GB) should do...

My parents had one of those, in the 80s I think. Most of the names/addresses were crossed out, as they were no longer accurate. There might have been 5 pages of legit data in a 30 page book, but I couldn't read the handwriting anyway. Not a chance I'll be bothered to carry something else around...

    Memory & Hard drives

Depends on a lot of stuff. The typical is that it is copied from the disk to memory, then messed with, then it overwrites the one that was sitting there. Of course, all kinds of things can affect this.

That's what I'm doing, but it will take all night. What I attempted to do was physically move the drives containing the VMs to the new server, adding them to inventory, and starting them. That would have taken about 10 minutes.

Somehow upgrading the version of ESXi gives me an error any time I try to start a VM. It basically says that this ESXi server doesn't support features that the old one did. It won't tell me which features, or offer to disable them. Just refuses to start. Crap. Now in the process of converting...
