Since I knew I was building a RAID-5 array, I started with 750GB drives. Now as 750GB drives come down in price, I can continue adding without having too many drives total. I'm falling below 400GB free on the main array, so I'll be adding another drive soon.

Harbor Freight is primarily a brick and mortar establishment, so buying stuff like this from them is not far-fetched. They are notorious for selling the cheapest stuff they could find in China; no quality control at all.

I'm thinking that the only differences are firmware and possibly cherry-picked motors/actuators. I don't think it could possibly be worth the price difference unless performance/reliability were at a serious premium.

I'm considering water cooling because of the space considerations. In order to have 11 (soon 12) hard drives cooled quietly, there needs to be a lot of space around them. Just the hard drive compartment of my chassis is the size of a NSK2400, and the drives are still over 50C and too noisy. If...

Mine has a built-in spring-loaded cover, but if the change is overflowing while you are changing plugs, it happens. 3 times in 4 years, I think.

Just ordered some of these. According to a number of things I read online, they should "just work".

I've spent a fair amount of time working on systems that have it on or off. Software updates, driver updates, and add/remove programs absolutely drags with it running. You can also see it in the memory usage on XP and 2003 (not Vista because of it's "use it all-for now" memory philosophy).

Sorry, one of the first things I do on a computer is disable system restore. Major performance hog.

For one workgroup, the speed was an issue. Not wanting to go with a full-blown copier-with-ethernet, I pooled some LJ4s ;)

Seconded. I deploy used LJ4s to the nastiest industrial sites. With regular cleaning, they never actually die. The driver is also my default of choice, most stable ever. If all that is needed is B&W single-sided output, I usually don't even bother with other drivers.

I wouldn't replace all my drives with SSDs, I think the 750GB drives will be around for quite a while yet. But the 10,000RPM low-capacity raptors could easily be replaced with SSDs. If I could do a 1-to-1 replacement that would get rid of 5 10k drives, and reduce my heat/energy needs significantly.

Consistent? No, that would be too easy ;) It has happened to me 3-5 times out of the last ~30 posts. I'm not all that worried about it.

My concern is that a 44-pin converter and a PATA-SATA converter combined might not play well.

I'm waiting for my favorite RAID card vendor to start selling these. Sounds like what you are after. But if I can get the new SSDs in SATA I don't see a performance advantage over what I have now.

mubs, I know on Cable Modems you need your MAC registered with them because the network has multiple users, but on DSL each user has their own circuit. I don't think I'll need to register it with them, but if I do it shouldn't be that hard.

The Netopia 3346 modem/routers that PacBell (now ATT) provide really suck. They crash regularly, brick often, and just don't respond the rest of the time. It's even worse now that Motorola has purchased Netopia, support is down the tubes. I need some replacements. I need a single DSL connection...

I don't need hot-swap at all, and all the drives are pretty much working all the time so powering them down isn't needed either. I typically have some downloads going, winamp drawing from the data array, a game (either playing or minimized to the start bar), and of course the OS.

I actually am aiming for more spacing between the drives than I get using either the Supermicro hot swap or the P180's lower drive cage. I think the Zalman coolers (one per 5.25" bay) will give ample spacing between them. The heatpipes also increase the surface area, and that has to be a good...

Well, I happen to have a P180 chassis lying around as well. So many choices.
