    Video Cards

The card is in the mail, perhaps swedes are a bit slower or they went after the Asrock and Sparkles, which seem to have better cooling and so on. It would be really nice if Intel levelled up on the integrated GPUs. Perhaps in a generation or two? (With the AI-stuff beeing so popular and all?)

I ordered a B580 for the son. IIt will join a 11700 (maybe K) and 32 GB RAM. And he uses a 1080 monitor, so it should be enough.

I know, it makes the HW price almost irrelevant. =) And if you license all physical cores with EE you can run as many VM:s as you want with EE on that machine. So you can potentially cram a bit more out of it, vs Standard Edition where you have to license every core in every VM. But I'm also...

My only comfort is that I don't have to use Citrix, like most people in the organisation. LOL. I cannot agree more about Outlook, and on my previous laptop I couldn't be in teams meetings when the AV was scanning, not sure if it was a feature or a bug. Then, maybe the bad performance is not...

Even if we had 32 x 6 GHz cores and 1TB of RAM developers would make software that makes the OS lag... more bloat, new frameworks, new versions of Teams and Outlook with AI and whatnot... My sons computer feels pretty fast but he doesn't have Teams or Outlook installed. But every other computer...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I am also curious what's in the NAS boxes. :) Do you have different data tiers? For example one NAS with Optane Enterprise disks for high performance, one with larger volume normal SSD:s, one with spinning disks for huge volumes of historical data?

I think regarding code vs speed, when performance increases we come up with more bloat. It would be great if we could write in plain English what we want the result to be and it outputs ASM-code (and compile it for us), but it seems like there is some way to go. And even then we need to have...

Intel 13900k and 14900k chip failures

I had a pretty "fun" bug on my work laptop (1255U CPU) when it was almost new: All cores rän on 400 MHz, all the time. It got fixed in a BIOS update but it was unusable for a few days. (Teams + Outlook starts automatically..) Regarding ASUS, I haven't kept up with the motherboard market in the...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Really sweet... I hope they turn up as options in mainstream servers during the next 6-9 months. It would make a nice drive for TempDB in SQL Server.

    Ryzen

Single threaded performance is important, especially for my favourite, SQL Server where I (for my workload) tend to buy the minimum but fastest cores available. But in the general server space it's usually more about density and power consumption, and 96 -> 128 cores per socket is a decent step...

Seems like Seasonic will have a couple of ATX3.1 models PSUs available in USA in October. https://seasonic.com/power-supplies/ I haven't bought any PSUs since maybe 2020-2021, but have only bought Seasonic for almost as long as I can remember. I bought an Enermax to a P4 1.8GHz system, the...

I'm not even close, I built 3 or 4 machines at work around late 2013-2014, I was away for 5 years so 1 or 2 probably got decommissioned when we changed owners, but 2 are running legacy software, runs 24/7 and are still going strong. (Fractal Design Define cases, Seasonic PSUs, ASUS TUF...

It is similar in Sweden, we have Bank-ID, not developed by the state but the large banks and defacto standard, useful almost anywhere in the digital domain. Maybe it's easier to implement these things in smaller countries? I think Estonia is the most digitalized countries in the world.

SQL Server is the only Microsoft product I like. (Except maybe some keyboard or mouse back in the days) Advice: If you want to earn big bucks, stand by a product that is as expensive (like $7500/core for Enterprise Edition) as possible and become really good at it. (Of course, in Sweden we work...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I agree. Perhaps 8 TB is pushing the limits of current technology? I imagine it's easier to manage cooling, reliability and so on in the 3.5/2.5/EDSFF formats. In the server space M.2 are more common as boot drives where I suppose they see a lot less activity than their carrier mounted friends...

That is still very good, I hope you get back into your normal routine. I managed to ride 5000 km last year, up from previous years of 1500-1600 km. For me, riding outdoor is still the best when the weather lets me, great way to let the thoughts wander and enjoy the local scenery in 3D. 🙂

    Mech keyboards

I bought a Varmilo with their EC Sakura switches a while ago. They click and requires mute during Teams meetings, but I like the feeling of both the keyboard (heavy+dampened) and the switches. My only other experience with mechanical switches is with MX Red + the IBM in 1987 or so.
