    I'm Diskless!

Hey guys, might be an easy question. I'm yet to do a full diagnosis, I just noticed it last night before bed. I switched on my computer, and an error message occured along the lines of "Insert a system disc that you can boot off.". Strange! I hadn't moved anything. The disc is a 3-month-old...

    New computer problems

Hey guys, I just put a new PC together: Asus P5LD2 mobo Pentium D 820 Something X300 Thermaltake xp550 np psu I had to get a 20-24 pin adapter for the psu. Basically, I press the power button, and the chassis fans spin maybe one step, but there is nothing after that. If I press the button...

    USB Flash data loss

I'm guessing this is futile, but I plugged in my 256MB PNY USB flash drive thismorning and there are no files. None. I had quite a lot on there that I would love to recover. Why has this happened? I really doubt the files have been manually deleted. Is there anything I can do?

    Sectors in a track

Does the amount of sectors per track get larger as you move from the centre track to the outer-most track on a HDD? People say that the sustained read gets faster when the file is placed on the outer-most tracks. I only see that as possible if there is more data in outter tracks.

Unlocking clock multiplier on ASUS boards

I saw this a while ago, might be old news, but the good guys at ASUS have released BIOS updates that allow you to unlock the clock multiplier on their boards. This isn't just for their new boards, they are doing this for boards that go as far back as the P4P800 (and a couple of earlier ones)...

    HDD performance bottleknecks

Could you guys list possible hard-disk-related (and IO) reasons for slower than expected application performance. For example, excessive fragmentation. Cheers

    Can't boot from CD

help me out guys, I just can't seem to think strait. It's an old motherboard, an ASUS P55T2P4. I've ripped a CD drive from another computer, I have nothing on the HDD. The computer has recognised the HDD and the CDROM. I have selected a "CDROM,C,A" boot order. The computer just doesn't do...

    Gateway advice

I'm running a small network at home to provide wireless/wired access to our broadband connection for the 6 family members computers. I am using a linksys router/WAP/4-port-switch to hold everything together. The only thing that pisses me off is complete disregard this thing has to bandwidth...

    Fireball Advice

I have a 40GB Quantum Fireball. And as a lot of the others have done, mine has gone up in flames, quite literally. A loud pop, followed by a puff of smoke, and the fireball was no more. This was a little while ago. I read up on some forums, and this happened to heaps of people, I'm sure you guys...

    Windows shortcuts

Ok, this should be an easy little question. Back in the day, with windows 95 shortcuts, you could put a question mark at the end of the target path, so that when executed, the shortcut would pop up a little query box asking for arguments to be passed to the .exe. How do I do it in W2k/XP?

    Strange creature

Can someone tell me what this creature is that I have for an avatar? I'm sure I've seen him on a video clip for an old song, and I've always wanted to hear the song again, but I never have heard it since. PS. I have gmail invites if you need them.

Copying from one location to another

In a W2K machine, if I am copying (not moving) a file from, and to, the same physical and logical drive, then what is the process that the data goes through. Does data need to travel on the bus? Or does a drive usually perform this function internally? I guess I could just see what perfmon has...

    NCQ

Just how significant is this? Let me just rehash what I think it does. NCQ can queue instructions for the next few reads/writes, and can make an informed decision about which is the smarter instruction to fulfill first, based on the rotational position of the heads. Thats all good and well in a...

    300MB SATA

I often hear people at school having a cry about how 300MB SATA will have zero effect on a computers performance. I understand that the bus is not the bottleneck, but with HDDs with larger cache, like 16MB, wouldn't there be a reasonable cache-hit ratio? If so, then peek bus-throughput is not...
